[TM2S] TM1 car model in map causes reset of own car skin

Post by Electron »

A lot of Stadium tracks build for TMUF/TMNF (TrackMania 1) are also playable in TrackMania 2 Stadium.
Either the map author has resaved his old tracks in TM2S anew or third party server admins converted someone else maps with the /computeallshadows command line parameter to ManiaPlanet.

But there is a problem if such a "converted" map includes a 3D car model with a locator. Downloading this model causes ManiaPlanet to reset your own car skin to the default gray/silver car. Every time you play such a map, you have to select your personal skin anew in the profile page.

3D car models created for TrackMania 1 are not compatible with ManiaPlanet. Normally they are not shown in the garage to select or a warning indicates that this model is not compatible and should be revised.
But ManiaPlanet loads such a incompatible model from the Internet, if the TM1 map author used such a model with locator as its own personal skin or as Ghost inside the MediaTracker (e.g. for a GPS). This causes the reset of your own car skin after playing this map.

You can reproduce this bug with the linked test map. After starting the map, a 3D car model is loaded from the internet, because I used it as skin for the GPS. But the model is not shown, because it's an old, incompatible one created for TrackMania 1.
After exiting the map and playing another or the same map or visiting the garage, you will see, that your personal skin was reset to the default gray/silver one.

This bug was reported very often. Here is one thread and here another one.
It's very annoying, if you permanently lost your skin and need to reselect it in the profile page.

Very good that you found out what was causing the skin reset
Lets hope they can fix it.
