What are Tags used for?

I just made a cool Gold Tag for myself. But for what can I use it? It seems I can give them to others, but that costs 10k. What would they gain if I did give a tag? I'm pretty confused.

Tags are a kind of reward. Some teams deliver tags to their members. Contests organization can offer tags for the contest winners. You can also deliver a tag to a player because he did a brilliant map, a beautiful title, a nice skin, etc or just because he is a kind guy.

So where would these tags be if I gave one to someone? In-game somewhere? Also, can I give it to myself for being awesome?

Bit off topic, but the tags in ManiaPlanet compare to TM1, does not display as nicely on score. They seems to overlap with your nick and therefore not very visible.
