Ladder Point Ranking System

Post by crsbuds »

Hello this is Crs buds from Curse's Shootmania team. I'm writing this topic because I'm a little frustrated with Shootmania Elite's new ladder point system. I know I'm not the only one that is upset with the changes that have been made. The main problem is that people who are completely undeserving of being rank #1 are indeed rank #1, and theres soooooo many of them. For example, I am currently rank #7 in North America. Why am I seeing people who are rank #1 in North America, that don't even have half as many wins as I do, or are even half as good. I've been playing Shootmania since early beta, and have accumulated over 8,000 wins. To see someone who has been playing for half as long, not even half as good, has 1500 wins, AND is ranked above me, is just frustrating and confusing. What happened? I'm sure I'm not the only person that agrees that this new system that has been implemented requires some tweaking.

The ladder on NADEO games has always ben criticized for its no-relevance, wich is true...They never changed it since it seems to fit for them (ladder, 100k sunday afternoon) So the concluson is : Why not... If they wan so, and seems to not want to change it, we have to live with this ladder that obviously means nothing.

I'm fine with it but i can see why others won't be. If it's a competetive game the ladder should mean something :\

Useless ladder is useless :D Why searching easy when we can find complicated ladder system which doesnt work !!! Just put an elo system or League system with REAL OFFICIAL MATCHMAKING.

Just look how much people prefer going on matchmaking instead of searching a server !

haha I agree, nobody in North America is using Matchmaking, but if an elo system, or proper ranking system were put in for it, I think a lot more people would begin to use it.

The ladder points calculations are based on an Elo rating system. The problem with looking at simplistic statistics such as win / loss ratio is that those statistics do not take into account the quality of your opponents for each of those matches. The Elo system give everyone a rating and then calculates the expected probability of either side winning based on the difference between their ratings. If you win a match which you are expected to win with a high probability then less points are added to you rating than if you win a match that you had a lower probability of winning. And likewise if you lose a match the number of points you lose is dependent on how likely that outcome was. Thus if you are playing against strong opponents (as you would be if you were joining a game late) then you will earn more points per win than you would against weaker opponents. This is why you are seeing people ranked ahead of you who have fewer wins than you do, because a lot of your early wins will have been against lower level players simply because you started playing the game at an early stage when the entire skill base among all players was lower

If, as I suspect, the rating system is more advanced than just points awarded for wins / losses then there will also be points awarded based on how much you win by. So if you win by only 2 points then you will not be awarded as many points as if you win by a larger number of points. My suggestion is to try challenging those players directly if you want to rank higher than them. If you really are better than they are then you should improve your ranking quite quickly.
