Issues editing .dds files

Hello, When i open .dds files (details.dds or pilot.dds) all i get is as in the image i show here

This happens in paint.net or Gimp or any other .dds file editor i tried
Any help on what i am doing wrong?

Do you mean the checkered layer?
This is a display for either a locked layer, or for transparency.

Check your settings... Also check the import (with mipmaps)

Iirc, the transparency channel controls the "shiny-ness" of the skin.

Hello !

I think that's exactly what Miss said : the transparency channel (Alpha channel) here controls the Shininess of the texture. A high transparency means a high Alpha channel, means a Shiny texture. In your case, we can see it's quite shiny (gives that metallic effect) and we indeed see it's transparent ^^
