How to convert .bik files to .webm

Post by Cerovan »

Recently we have had to remove the support of the .bik format and to add the .webm format instead (which is opensource).

So if you have content in .bik that you want use on Maniaplanet (panes, avatars), you have to convert them in the .webm format.

To do this, you can use software like "Free WebM Video Converter" or "Any-Video-Converter" which are both free to use.

If you are converting pane from several maps, you need to recalculate the shadows to be usable online. To recalculate a batch of maps once (instead of doing them ony by one), you need to modify the Maniaplanet shortcut this way:

Code: Select all

ManiaPlanet.exe /computeallshadows /useronly /fullcheck /LmQuality=High
or

Code: Select all

ManiaPlanet.exe /computeallshadows /useronly /fullcheck /LmQuality=Default
Now your maps are ready and you're using webm materials! :1010

1. I don't understand why it is necessary to recalculate the lightmaps so that the map is playable online.

2. The official animated BIK signs and running lights for TMStadium are still supported, right?

3. Animated WebM signs are not properly shown. The playback speed of the first few seconds/iterations is far too high.

4. Are there any limitations (size, frame rate, vbr/cbr, ...) for WebM signs, avatars and Title PackImage clips?

Because you'll change the property of the pane (with a new data) which may require a lightmap recalculation.

Can you precise please?

It seems that this didn't support BIK as input format:
Website Free WebM Video Converter wrote:Input file formats: *.avi; *.ivf; *.div; *.divx; *.mpg; *.mpeg; *.mpe; *.mp4; *.m4v; *.webm; *.wmv; *.asf; *.mov; *.qt; *.mts; *.m2t; *.m2ts; *.mod; *.tod; *.vro; *.dat; *.3gp2; *.3gpp; *.3gp; *.3g2; *.dvr-ms; *.flv; *.f4v; *.amv; *.rm; *.rmm; *.rv; *.rmvb; *.ogv; *.mkv; *.ts.
Does Maniaplanet supports webm with alpha-channel (transparency)?

I was not aware that block skins emit light.

I mean the official animated BIK signs shipped with the game (click to enlarge):

These are still BIK files. Are they still supported in the future?

They will (or are already been) ported in webm :)

@undef.de: I took the software from a previous thread, maybe the bik support has been dropped, i remove it from the OP (opening post).

About your second question, we actually don't know, we'll test that

OK, you ported some of them with the last game update.
But many signs were forgotten :!:

I converted all my BIK files into WEBM and uploaded to my server next to bik files. As I see - maps works again without change them (just reads webm instead of bik extension). That is cool. I can fix all my maps just by change files on my fileserver. But please, PLEASE, can you promise me that I will not have to convert these files again after 3 weeks if you change your mind?

And about undef.de post - no, program supports BIK, but there is no bik on extension list in open dialog box. "All files" or drag'n'drop works.
