Reverse

Post by newguy » 06 May 2013, 03:17

It would be nice if reversing worked just the same as going forwards, rather than being slow, even though this is how reversing typically behaves in vehicles. This would allow us to have "reverse tracks" where we must complete the tracks by reversing.

It's a minor change, but I think things like this are necessary given that many people whom I have spoken to see not much reason to purchase the game given its difficult-to-distinguish similarity with TMNF.

What do you exactly mean by "reversing"? Driving backwards?
In fact, the backwards key is first a brake.
And only when you stand still, you can start driving backwards.
This has always been like this in all TM games and titles.

I don't think this is the cause why people aren't buying it.
They only take it as (bad?) excuse because they are used the free TMN
There will be new blocks soon, then it will be at least a bit different :pil

Reversing means driving backwards (holding the downward arrow key in-game if using a keyboard). I am aware that the backwards key is first a brake, just as the forwards key is a break if you are driving backwards. I thought it would be nice if reversing behaved the same as driving forwards (in terms of speed and acceleration) since it would allow us to race with this. Imagine having to race on a track that you've got a good time on, but backwards; that's what I'm trying to get at.

I understand that Nadeo is going to release new blocks and I'm not saying that this is the reason people aren't buying TM2 Stadium, I'm simply saying that this would be a nice addition to the game since reverse is practically never used, and also allows for new types of racing i.e. new content, which in turn would help sell the game. To implement this it would of course be necessary for the checkpoints to detect whether you are driving forwards or backwards, such that only driving through the checkpoints backwards would be allowed on a "reverse track". You might be able to do this by having the reverse speed in negative digits, and the checkpoint code could check for a speed <0.

It's up to Nadeo whether they want to add much new content to TM2 Stadium. I'm just giving you an idea which may or may not be popular if implemented. You'll never know unless you give it a shot.

ok, understood, so you just want the restriction of "only one slow backwards gear" to be removed. :)
Driving a track backwards at faster speed could be a challenge indeed.

However, something similar could be achieved with a new block that inverts left and right steering, e.g. like the "no speed" block" which removes power, and the effect would last until the next checkpoint.
What about this?

Exactly - to remove being able to use only 1 gear in reverse. The "inverter block" sounds good though and probably wouldn't be difficult to implement :D

The only problem with the inverter block is that it would require greater effort for someone to convert their existing track into a reverse track. With the inverter block they would have to add one after each checkpoint to avoid it from reverting back to normal steering.

i don't really get the point of making driving backwards pretty much the same as driving forwards
if it's the same, why don't you just drive forwards?

It's the same as driving forwards in terms of acceleration and speed, but the steering is inverted since you're driving backwards.

Turn your keyboard the other way round.

Well the car clearly handles differently because the steering point is different in reverse. It's like driving those utility vehicles that have rear-wheel steering.

well it takes about one minute to change the corresponding key bindings...

yeah that's a point! the problem is that you can't drive properly at 300 km/h with a steering that is based on walking speed and on making very tight turning circles possible ^.^
