What Could Be Possibly Wrong With Canyon?

Post by bryan1998 » 03 Sep 2011, 19:11

I have no idea what is wrong with Canyon.

It is... simply... AMAZING!

I love (almost) everything about it!

Thank you Nadeo/Ubisoft for this great game, and the bonus of getting a beta until the full thing comes out.

Looking forward to the full game.

Who thinks that this, albeit very nice comment, didn't reserve its own topic?

There are probably better places for this to go, but since you asked, I'm going to answer what's wrong with this game. I think a lot of people have the same experience as me, and really it boils down to misunderstanding.

The problem is me. I'm not a huge racing fan, but I played Trackmania Nations Forever a lot. My friend got me into it a while ago. It was free, and it was fun. The maps were crazy, frantic, and massively entertaining. I never did pay for the game, but I played it quite a bit. Then trackmania 2 was announced. The videos looked cool, and I felt like supporting a developer I had freeloading off of for some time. It was spend $25 and get a good looking brand new game, or $30 and get a fairly old game now, with a few new car types and environments, which assumed were only minor changes from the "demo", mostly graphical. This is of course, not the case, and could have been determined by looking at the trackmania community even once, but what did I care, it's just a fun timekiller. Then I play trackmania 2, and it's alright, but it's not as awesome as the first one was. The maps don't go for insane stunts. And controlling on those that are there doesn't work well at all because you just slide all over the place. The drifting was pretty fun, but that seemed to be the main thing to do in this new game. So I check out the game's forums to see who agrees with me only to find that apparently, I'm everything that's wrong with this community, and an idiot, and that what I'm looking for isn't going to happen in this environment, and I should have payed more attention, and that to get what I'm looking for, I should wait and pay them again later for a different environment. That's just great.

Anyway, unlike some, I understand the other side of the story now, understand that stadium isn't trackmania, and I'm not gonna force it on the people who do want this. Do I regret buying the game? No. I still want to support Nadeo, but I probably would have been better off buying spending $5 more so I don't have to spectate every five rounds.

HeadingtoFall - I think you raise some fair points. I've tried to keep out of these topics up until now as they have all descended into subjective arguments, and I have learnt to keep out of arguments on the internet :) I come at it from the exact opposite position to you - I prefered TMO and TMS enviros to stadium, and I have been an active member of the forums and the beta tests. I enjoy Canyon, but i personally still prefer the handling in TMS. This is just my opinion, but I love the depth and the skill needed to be fast at noslide.

However, I still think you have made the right purchase. The game grows on you over time, and we are at the beginning of the journey. Tracks and ideas will develop in the coming days, weeks and months, and the tools to create maps in TM2 (with maniascript) are much enhanced. Who knows what will be possible in 6 months time? I think it's worth persevering with.

I think it's a shame that your impression is that the commiunity thinks that your opinions make you a part of the problem - I would think that the silent majority respect your views and thank you for articulating them in a way that is easy to understand.

I hope you can be open-minded and stay with this game past the release: Trackmania is like a fine wine - the product will mature and improve with age
