Upgrading from TMNF account on Steam

So somebody just gifted me TMUF Star Edition. It comes with a CD key in steam. I've had this old TMN account for years (from back when it was called ESWC something) and tried to upgrade it, but I get this error:

An error occurred during conversion
incorrect server reply
Conversion aborted.

Is this a problem on Nadeo's servers or with me? I tried changing one letter and it tells me to please input a valid key. But putting my key in gives an error. I've already disabled my firewall and I can still play online with Nations capabilities, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

I'd be thankful for any advice or help. Do I have to create a new account? I like the stats on this one.
