I am able to re-paint the default cars, but it won't let me save...just says that the file is read-only.
What am I doing wrong?

Save As, not Save.
Save means overwriting what already exists

Re: Basics - How to Create a Car
As Metoxys pointed out, use the 'Save As' button (the one that looks like a floppy disk with a circular arrow on it) instead of the normal 'Save'. Then click on the name of the car and change it to something else. You can't save a car with the same name as a default car that came with the came. Using 'Save As' creates a new custom car with a name of your choosing. Hope this helps
