Not if the battlefields are big enough...and besides, -real- wars aren't restricted to 16 v 16 people...

"Hold on a sec, gotta check the match list...*waits* Oop...gotta wait until the next battle soldier, we're all full up here."

Anyway, I would think with proper voice communication or hotkeyed responses, it could turn into a squad type of thing...every dozen or so guys would be under a "commander" that did a lot of coordinating...just think of the teamplay opportunities!
@tcq: Wouldn't that just turn it into a potential cheat? You could have a few guys on the other team "helping" via xFire or something like that...I just don't see a benefit to friendly fire...other than that the skilled players would think it was more realistic...but I think the noobs would just abuse it.
-Disclaimer: I have nothing against new players--I'm never in the top ranks of any game I play--I just don't like people who play for teh lulz, or whatever else. Sure it's a game and we're all supposed to have fun...but take yourself at least a -little- seriously in a teambased game like SM is likely to be...

Nah, was just a joke

But i think the numbers of palyers shouldn't be higher than a 32 players. But we can't tell anything about this, without knowing how the game will work out.
E.g. if there is a Team vs Team vs Team ... vs Team mode could be fun and then there could also be palyers ofer 32 needed.

@ the OP, I'm also for the single-player missions idea and how it can incorporate AI, etc. You've definitely made a few good points about why offline play would be so important. It would definitely open up a very diverse genre of maps.

Well, I guess that's true...I just think the chaos could be minimized with effective voice communication and squad control...that's the key here. There are so many FPS's that have VOIP that could be great, and it just turns into a shouting free-for-all over the mic because everybody is shouting orders at everybody else, or the lippy 13 year old is bitching about how he'll get his big brother to kick your ass or something...

Here's a suggestion, not sure if it goes here...if not I'll make my own topic for it: There should be a time before the match, say 2 min, or even just a minute, like the warmup in some TM matches, where the squad roles can be assigned. If there are any. But like, say, the infantry can be picked out, the heavies can be picked out, and the squad leaders can be assigned...you could even put a special "flag" above their heads that only the allies could see so they knew who was who...

In Trackmania, there can be a lot of players because other players don't really interact with us (there's no collision).
That's why lag isn't an issue in Trackmania.
If there is no limit in Shootmania, does it mean that we won't really interact with other players in Shootmania neither ?!
We won't shoot other players ?

It is possible that ShootMania is a game where we make our stand with targets and the fastest wins. In this case, there is no limit of players except the server capacity.

This sounds more like biathlon...which to me is fun, but already has it's place in several other sporting games...and besides, didn't Nadeo already claim SM was to be an FPS? That to me signifies combat...

you should be careful at thinking that it will be possible to have a lot of players. We don't know yet how the netcode will run under high number of players and if other shooters runs with lower number, I can easily imagine that having to make the simulation for too many people and handling the high bandwith needs will be the real limits. In addition, even if we do right, we will surely have to optimize a lot of things afterward. The code is different from TM
