I'd like to reiterate this. I'm also pretty sure that in the older layout, the region you were in "popped out" more.
I was pretty confused at first with this myself. Having atleast 7 servers or more would definitely somewhat alleviate this problem. I don't mind being grouped up with people from my region but first make sure there is a decent numbers of servers to pick from.
Still would really have to option to save my preference because I do change it manually to World everytime I start up SM. The reason for that is to be able have more different gamemodes available to me.
There also was a decent number of servers in the first hours of Stadium, just not from US it seems.

My mate came over and tried Trackmania 2 Canyon, I got him to just to see what he did. First thing he said is the menus look like crap, too bloated and didn't understand why you had to select the Canyon image to get into the game. Then he world out multiplayer and all, that much is pretty obvious, then he ignored the country thing and laughed that there was only 3 servers (UK) with people on and even those didn't have many.
He didn't even notice the arrow to go up to Europe and then world.........
It needs to be changed, every single person I know or have seen like that Giantbomb video, they make the same mistake. If it defaulted to world, I'd see a list of servers with people playing and want to play. If however I only see a few populated, I'd be much more likely to quite thinking the game was dead and I think it's a vicious cycle for the game where lots of people have bought it and thought it was dead for this reason.
Default it to world and if I want to play in my country I will. Even better, get rid of countries and just have pings like every game has done since I can remember. I don't understand what the country system is for anyways :\
Before Steam it used to be a lot worse because buying and downloading the game from the site was a nightmare, took me ages to work it out lol. At least now people can easily get into the game, I just hope you change the setting before they all quit and request a refund for buying a dead game on Steam.

There could be initially a separated table which shows the first servers of every level:
4~5 World
4~5 Continent
4~5 Country
If a server appears also on the upper level, take the next one.
Example:
It could also be good to show constantly the count of all the available the servers (aa) and of all the populated servers (pp) for each level:
World (pp/aa) | Continent (pp/aa) | Country (pp/aa) | Region (pp/aa)

Cool idea TMarc!
In my opinion, we need more ability for customisation!
It starts at the home screen; would be cool if you can just move the rectangles and place them how you wish.
Please fix that with the servers. Also , the server browser is running horribly slow (the new one); I would rather wait a few more seconds to get a full server list, than just one page.
Greetings

you can move rectangles (stations ^^) with Ctrl pressed. however, they mess up after restarting the game :/

No they don't mess up, if you use the bottm [+] menu to modifiy the layout
And certainly killaprodtm means to have a more flexible position management

We need to have the possibility to have the list of servers per rapport of the number of players and to save this parameter. This morning, I have this in Europe :
I play for play and not to win LP. Le level average is useless for me.

yeah, I guess this could also be done with a filter.
And I would also like the favorites to be also displayed in this list, but always at the top.

Made a similar post to this months ago in a discussion about server filters.

Like TMarc said, I think a filter would be handy, example on how it's done in Quake Live:
