Great discussion! Although one that recurs from time to time.
Pros
- It would be awesome for video making.
- Some people enjoy running other people off the road.
- It could make for some interesting gamemodes.
- It might be fun for LAN play or Split/quad screen play.
Cons
- Some people don't enjoy being run off the road.
- Trackmania tracks are hard enough already without adding a moving object to avoid.
- Online gameplay has too much latency even for ShootMania. TM cars move much faster than people, or even cars in most other racing games. It would amplify the latency problems.
- The lack of collisions is part of what makes TM... TM. Change that, or even making it an option, and you risk ruining the identity of the game itself.
- Adding collisions would change the nature of online play as people would become more aggressive (even in chat) than they already are.
I personally think the negatives outweigh the positives. But that's just my opinion.

But the subject here seems to be only between collision in 2 cars. For my part i would also prefer a draft effect than collision. Maybe it will be possible one day with script if we now the distance between 2 cars and with accell parameter. Could be nice for Nascar style race.

I would like this a lot!
Not be the default settings, but to play modes where this is possible would be amazing. This would also take away a lot of "cons'" on eyebo's conlist.
I also consider this 'wish/request' a pretty high-priority wish/request. Things like this can have a big impact on the game. It's one of these things that all players will notice instantly.

Hah. In shootmania I don't like to be eliminated either :b.
Also, I think you may be right about the latency. Shootmania is okay atm latency-wise, as long you're from europe.
And about the identity thing; partially true, that's why I intended it to be seperate from the default modes. It should not replace genuine tm racing.
Many 'outside of tm' people ask for collisions in tm from time to time and I believe now would be the perfect time to implement a feature like that; just because it can be really fun for some just to mess around a bit. It would definetly raise the the amount of sold games and also it would give many people some space for creative (and probably emotional) output.

so an arcade-collision system combined with items (to pick up) to have weapons for the other players
MarioKart + NeedForSpeed2 = TrackMania evolution haha

I like collision, that would be fun, but on the other side, it is not, what trackmania should be, otherwise trackmania (original) had the collision in the solo survival campaign (if someone can remember it). Instead of the ghosts 3 different bots.

For that the tracks should be wider and have more space, the tight roads TM usually have would be a disaster with collision
