Well, probably because you didnt use the links as a force-downloadlink, so thats probably the cause it wasnt working for you. I am using it for all my locators and its working as a charme!
But if you dont trust it, use

We did use the direct download links, actually. Seemed to not work for 50% of all players. Switched to hosting them ourselves and it worked perfectly. But that was maybe over a year ago, maybe those issues have been solved, I don't know.

I think maniacdn or a hosting company you pay is the way to go. Free solutions work for a few years then you loose your data and need to start all over. Cloud solutions are not meant for hosting so the way they work might change so even if at one point it did work nothing guarantees it will work in the future.
If you have files to big for maniacdn, You can get 100gb for 2€ per month at OVH which is very reasonable.

I have seen that, I tried to download it, and there was no virus (checked with bitdefender)
The virus message is issue of chrome or firefox (globe-browser didn't show anything)

If i understood it correctly you want to say, that it's save, because your browser don't show up any warning. I would trust firefox or chrome more than a self-made browser.
But back to the topic- avira browser protection warned me too. What about a webserver or dropbox pro?

Don't ignore these warnings. There's a reason they exist.
But yes, if you want something for yourself you can get something very cheap if you look around hosting providers (eg. OVH, Online.net)
