I have been dreaming of such an editor for 2 years. There's only hoping that Nadeo planned to implement this feature into TM2/Questmania/Shootmania from the beginning.
Implementing this later on would probably be very messy, I agree. If you look at Minecraft for example you can see it is a feature people crave for. TM also shares the same simplistic approach in the editor as that game....so it makes quite a nice analogy. Minecraft was created by one single guy which makes me more confident that the Nadeo crew had time to work on this, besides working on three game titles with an amazingly small crew ^^
Network capacity would not be an issue I think, depends on how much freedom you have in the new editor. But if this feature were implemented in TMU I don't think it would require much more traffic than that of a multiplayer replay...which would make this work with dozens of builders

I'm bumping up this topic.
I like the concept of multiplayer editor.
It's a concept that can grow in multiple directions :
-Multiple users editing a track at the same time (see your friends mapping, make team-made maps, etc...)
-People playing the map online while it's simultaneously being edited by it's author to help test the map in real-time
-being able to modify your own tracks while playing online without having to interrupt your local server (and without having to use a dedicated server, because most people don't even know how to make it work)
-An actual Multiplayer gameplay mode would definitely be awsome, there could be many different rules :
-> the best time gets to edit the next map and has x-amount of time to make the new track
-> It could be made as one editor does all the work
-> it could be made as multiple editors share the map area and each have one section of the map to do their own independent small tracks their own area
-> it could be made as multiple editors sharing the entire map area and have to link up their tracks to form a giant single track at specific pre-designated checkpoints or commonly negotiated checkpoints

Yeah really good points!!!
Overall it would be a cool new thing for the community. Currently the Editor is only an offline version, but trackmania bases on onlinegameplay and community. So an online multiplayer-editor can make the last offline part of tm to an online mode as the rest already is

The idea is sweet! But indeed, there should be an option to turn it off.
If something like this is integrated in the game, I think there should be an option before you start building to select if you want to build single or make a specified host.
But I see one other thing: while building, isn't it dangerous? Like for example: you are racing, a mountain appears out of nowhere and you can't brake while driving 300.

Yeah that won't be good for sure.
So I think it would be better to refresh the track only when you press "del" like mods, when they are loaded. They only appear after a restart

Here's something to ease the customization:
When you set up a multiplayer editor session, it would parallel that of making a normal server. That is to say that the format of the session is customizable by the session host. Also, much like servers now, I could image plugins being written for this kind of multiplayer session, as well, to even further push the level of customization.

Your idea is the same as the editor in LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet2 and as far as I remember it's not possible for the joining person to delete the other's creation, it's just for the creator himself possible.
But I think it could be a good idea, because if you want to create a map with someone other you don't need to swap it all the time but make it at the same time...
As said, it's not good if every buddy can join whenever he wants to. Maybe you needn't turn it off but be able to accept the question to join or to disclaim it. That would be even better in my opinion.

Now that I understand it, sounds like a good idea!

It should be on "invitation system" i think.
And, what about something different.. not completely real-time.
I think to some kind of file-sharing/hosting, you start building your track, when you want you can save it and "share" it with a friend that would be able to just load the map (like a buddies feature) and keep editing it... and so on.
This is not really a multiplayer editing as you call it, would be just a sharing tool inside the game... you know.. for lazy people that dont want to do it other ways
[not sure i explained it very well..

Even though I was against this from the beginning, it's a nice idea from what I thought just now!
Imagine playing on private serves with friends and your friend uploaded a half-finished track and then you vote for track editing and finish the track together with new ideas. A changelog kind of stuff where other people's blocks glow in another color or servers or communities where you can upload a half-finished track and you let other people edit it and then you go back after a day or two and see what happened!
