Yes there is a difference. Look at starIslandA2 there you have to make a little edge in the tunnel, so that the car isn't slowed down, because of the gear ;)

In almost 5 years that i play, i never heard of that one.....
It has an effect, for sure, at least on coast and island, on some kind of curves ;)

For instance, in some curves if you are just a bit lower than the optimum speed, the car downshifts. When you accelerate, the car has to make another gear change, and it makes you lose time. If you're just at the optimum speed, you can keep the same gear and the accelerate faster. In this case, a gearbox could enable slower players to not lose the speed linked to the gear change.

It would be nice to have a gearbox that was OPTIONAL, because I know some players wouldn't like it. But like some things being suggested here, it would be beneficial to me, especially with TM's already "arcadey" feel. You could downshift without blowing your engine. And a prime example of this that I can think of has already been mentioned: Coast and Island curving. I think the maximum speed for a full-press keyboard hold turn on Island is somewhere in the 450kph range, and on Coast it's something like 120kph. I might be a little off, but I think I'm fairly close. Anyway, if you had a gearbox and a tachometer, at least for me, I can link the tach to the speedo and the gearbox in my head, so I know what speeds are at what point in which gear, and so I'm a really smooth shifter. If this was included, my personal TM performance could only improve. A caveat, though. If a gearbox was implemented, given the "arcadey" feel of TM, it would be better to have a linear one, rather than the H-box of modern racers...

I think it would be cool if just before you start a race it would ask you what transmission you wanted, or you could have it in the menu that comes up when you press Esc in a game, it could have a toggle button for manual and automatic, like the spectator mode button for example.

I support this idea 100%!!!!!!!!! Like others have said, it doesn't have to significantly change the way the car accelerates or handles, just something that will fill the void for those of us who just HAVE to hand their hand on the stick sticking all the time :D I have an H-pattern stick shifter mounted right next to my body when I play my racing games, and it feels quite wierd playing TM1 without using it. So please Nadeo add this as an option.

The gearbox in TM is just for sound effect.

Fixed. We're not saying we go back and put in a gearbox in TM1...nor are we discussing the merits of such a suggestion...we're saying that such an option may be beneficial in TM2

That's wrong guys. There is a gearbox in TM1. But you cannot control it. It's more like an automatic transmission. So you cannot decide, when you switch the gear, but it switches automatically at a certain speed ;)
