being able to place trees anywhere you want would be fun... but the block method doesnt seem to allow that.

Nah, i think you have to see it this way.
If you select TM2, then the blocks in the editor will be for racing, if you choose SM, then it will be the SM Blocks. But "how this blocks" will be connected is in all environments the same.
The editor may vary depending on the game using it, but its core functions are shared between them : blocks.
For now, we use blocks for all, and have some special features present in some games and not others.
However, a stand alone block of land with a tree has a function of decorating tree.
This concept has great chances to appear in a lot of environments, using graphic datas dedicated to that environment : oaks in rally, pines in snow, saguarro cactus in desert, etc...
You won't find the same [graphic] block used in 2 environments.

I agree, they coded it to be simplest and they have it.
Maybe Stadium will be not present and the stadium block will be integrated in the other ENV becouse the matrix of the ground is coded more large.
In this way we can know a map cause we runned on it and say to ourself : "Wow i'm shooting a player in the same map where i got a record!!"

Edit : Maybe we can enter the buildings used on Trackmania ahuahu, imagine shot a player under a palm, or in the zeppellin ballon!!!!

i agree with quicksilver but i think you cant hide behind a palmtree and not be hit with a shot.... Or the players have to be ultra small to hit.

I could think about the different sizes of this blocks and maybe the different maps have different sizes. So i can't see how it would be possible to use long speedy blocks out of valley in a close combat map on cyro.
