One thing that would probably be a good way to combine a timer with training could be something like the following proposal.
Let's say you need to drive 5 runs on an average one minute track until you can go for the first official try, if we havethe 5-min timer
Why not give players the possibility to accumulate official tries on a map? A player drives one day 50 times this map, but never uses the official tries, because he thinks he is not good enough yet. So effectively, he wasted 5 official attempts. What if the driver could get this 5 tries booked for him to drive them once a week? If he does not, they get deleted and he needs to do it again next week. Of course he can still go for the official tries with the 5 min timer. There should be of course a limit of, how many tries can be accumulated and how often in a week you can accumulate times. For example 10 tries 5 times a week as a maximum, to still have the pressure when aiming for an official try.

Through this system, longer mpas will also get some significant attention because you will have the feeling that you now have at least a chance to drive a good time in relation to you effort in the training.

But this are just my thoughts, haven't really played solo since the startrack campaign because I didn't like the timer system :)
well written and I support this idea

Eh instead of overhauling the system I think just doing a little tweak would make it so much better.

The reason I don't go as hard for official times isn't because of the 5 minute timer but because of the annoying popup every minute that asks me if I want to do it officially or still train. I need to allocate brainpower to the task of pressing down and accept every minute to make sure I can still train which gets me out of the groove. :P

I would prefer it to be a toggle in the menu so that I can train till my runs are consistent enough for an official run. It would probably save a lot of time in the long run instead of doing an offical run every time it's available and getting frustrated because of a slip up.

Besides from playing the solo mode of United Forever back in the day casually and only until I got gold everywhere I am completely new to TM and I wouldn't describe me as a good driver as of yet (I am more than happy to hit the best 40 on a +70 player server).

Not experience enough to give a educated answer, but a tougher wall bang punishment forces you to balance your driving between driving at the limit of your skill and driving safely which makes the game more stressful for me and therefor more fun.

Like the limit, gives the game a very "race day" kind of feel. Like qualifying and race in a Formula 1 game. Plus it reduces the value of luck when it comes to best scores which is probably even more important in a game with loops and crazy jumps than a more traditional racing game.

And as mentioned before, the stats are now less about who happened to got the fastest lap time on a map but more who is the fastest consistent player on said map.

that's what I call nolife. And this shouldn't sound insulting, it just means that someone is able to have so much time to play videogames.
I would call it not being a slave instead of having no life;-) I for example work 40 hours a week plus at least 8 hours transit and have a girlfriend who demands attention, but not being able to spend a couple hours a day with something that interests me would be really strange for me. You mentioned other hobbies, I got those too, but I don't get why playing games got to be a "lesser" hobby for someone to be not a "Nolifer"!?

I think that's what people mean when they say it's elitist. You have to get a lot better at the game now to get an official record. I'm not sure that's a bad thing in theory, but then I don't really care.
I don't really care about official records on a set of tracks that aren't even made by the community. To me the game is about community creating stuff and playing that stuff and official times on tracks made by Nadeo are pretty much irrelevant. Even in TMUF I only really cared about making official times on Startrack and the "My Campaign" campaign. In Maniaplanet I guess I'd only care about official times on titlepacks, if I gave it that much thought.

you made a good point here

so, the solution I added to the list (but may not arrive before 'months' since the size of the list) is that there is 5 official tries that you can force when you want per day. So, if you have less amount of time to play, you will not have such disadvantage. So, if you play half an hour, you will have around 10 tries.

Planets where a little more unfair than time, because it could be acquired by many ways. Time is more fair, and by making instant tries per day, it even reduce the gap between people that can spend a lot of time and the ones without it (which a constant official try would not do as well)

Like I said, I don't know when we will do it, but that's on the list.
