Did you read the posts above? Obviously not, because then you won't say it's just a sound effect, because it really affects the driving. Or i got you totally wrong and you mean that there shouldn't be a gear box in TM2.

You just made a timing mistake at changing the gears

But the best way to figure out, that the gearbox is real in TM1 is: to accelerate in island and drive small turns (atbest with analog input). Compare your driving to another (better) ghost and think about the timing, when you should press left/right in relation to the engine-sound you hear.
Just experiment around a bit and you'll notice, there really is a gearbox.

Another example is StarIsland A2. When you just try to noslide there in the tunnel, you are slower, because you loose too much speed in the right-turn, so that the car switches the gear later. You need to interrupt shortly, so that the car is faster and can switch the gear (but it requires some skill to figure it out)

I've played a few Stadium maps (old and new - anyone remember reRun?) where a few corners would ruin your times if you were 'lucky' enough to have your car downshift whilst drifting through them. Best example would be the odd left-hand corner after the first loop on reRun - if the car downshifts through there you can lose a lot of time.

It also affects the car on dirt - you don't want the car to shift gears when you're turning on Stadium's dirt corners (because it takes forever. ) I believe the same is on most environments; I've noticed it happen on Coast as well.

I tend to believe it is true, as some "reliable" people tell me so, but i did not have a chance to experience it.
