@Hylis,

Yes you are right, United can be compared to Maniaplanet as its don't have really an ambiance itself. Just the fact you merged 3 mythic games (TMN, TMS, TMO), the hype stayed in it like you said. But united was still a bit quite neutral when you look only at the product, I guess it's also the huge community behind it which helped.

But I can't imagine the same thing is possible on MP since environments came without story behind them, they also came in a neutral platform as a neutral environment. Even if TMN came as a single environment, TMN had its own ambiance behind it. Even if I'm not a fan of Stadium, I've to admit the ambiance on the nation version was sick.
But, I understand the move to try to create something big though.

When I heard Stadium, I see the gameplay.
When I heard TMN, I see the gameplay of stadium, but also the ambiance, the mood, the universe..

When I heard Canyon I see the gameplay, but unlike Stadium, I don't see something near it, it's like it's miss something.

Then TMT will be the source of inspiration for some players, like Sunrise was for United
Lego does not have an ambiance, it's for you to build it. Lego Starwars has an ambiance (even more if you put the music)
Raid is also good example of an ambiance that you can create on top.

The dynamics of "inter-environmental discussion" (ahem) has existed as far as trackmania 1. Ralley was the defacto "competitive" environment, followed by Snow, but Desert was more like the stunt playground.

So I've never seen trackmania as "cohesive" but it doesn't have to be, that's why it's unique because it offers these different style of play.

Mentally, I saw the gameplay of Bay like a follow up of Snow, but that's where it stops. There wasn't really something you could compare island or Coast with. So that's great.

Ironicly, as I remembered, coast was viewed as the go through "competitive", coast being very slow and ralley being very slippery. They seemed like opposites, yet they had this special trait that required you to have some skill to maneuver your car and that made them suitable for competitive.

It's just interesting that these games always offered unique bubbles of character and personality.

ready to make palm stadium 3 in turbo lol

I'm not sure if I'm understanding this right.

Does Trackmania Turbo include a updated Valley/Canyon with better graphics + more blocks etc.?
Or is Trackmania 2 Stadium/Valley/Canyon + new Lagoon + without Maniaplanet = Trackmania Turbo?

I feel really retarded right now, I'm just not getting it.
Lagoon will release only next year on Maniaplanet, to take time to adapt content at best.
? So it will join Trackmania 2 Stadium/Valley/Canyon on Maniaplanet next year?
Why should I buy Trackmania Turbo then if I already have Stadium/Valley/Canyon? Or will Lagoon Maniaplanet not be available next year as a standalone?

I've been reading all the comments here and in the Hello Planet #5 post, but I still don't get it.

and as a side question:
Will we be able to turn off the checkpoint sound?

With normal Lego you have so much possibilities, but it's hard to build something consistent with your friend if you have no directions, no plans. So in the most cases, at the end you build a lot of thing, not related to each others. This is what's happen on Maniaplanet, everyone is building something little on his side.

With Lego star wars, there is juste a pre-existing ambiance to help you, you can still be really creative and everything will be more coherent because it will built on top to a base: the Star Wars theme.

It's like the difference when you are asked to this question:
"Draw me what you want:" Hmm no idea, I draw something cool but I focused more on the idea than the draw itself
"Draw me a car:" here I draw my best car, I only focused on the quality of the draw

Then, apply that to a community, for the first example il will grow in quantity, not in quality.
For the second example, all people will go in the same direction, and things will grow to the top.

But I understand more what you aim to do with Maniaplanet now. Good potential but more risky.
Maybe it's would have been better to play more with this metaphore of the planet, like an environment represented by an evolutive planet with its own evolutive ambiance.

you have the clouds that are the link between all environnements. You select your planet, you dive onto it and then you are in a terraformed place, ready to discover an ambiance made by players. It's no man sky by users ^_^ We still have tons of things to do, but Maniaplanet is a genesis more han an author work. We are providing the white paper for creative players. But we may give some original tastes at some occasions.

Anyways, I like the fact that Nadeo is conquering a new market (consoles). And as long as the most people like this new game (It appears as if the most people actually do) and if it attracts new people to the TM franchise as well ... then I am also happy. :)
eh.... not really. the only "new" thing that appears to be on the table is lagoon.

its pretty much the original TM2 package, with new blocks and lagoon added in.

I really don't feel like spending 40 dollars on a game i already bought... for 40 dollars.

i love that they're putting it on console, but for PC is kind of a rip off for everyone who bought the complete tm2 pack. theres just not that much more "game"

The 4 environments are stadium, canyon, valley, and lagoon. the only thing new is lagoon, everything else is just skinned to look a little cooler.

and you know what yes I'm being pessimistic. but seriously, you have to be on their payroll to think 40 dollars is a fair asking price for the PC version. the instant its on sale for reasonable price on steam, I am sold. until then not so much.

I liked so much the new gameplay and the new HUD. But I have a question: the new HUD will be available on the ManiaPlanet version?

The new Stadium rocks. Cars being released by an helicopter is awesome!

hmmmm, maybe its time for a Trackmania Turbo forum or at least a Trackmania Turbo section on this forum.
Lots of questions are going out of the scope of maniaplanet / Trackmania 2
