I'm all for mods in some scenarios. I think they're great to bring some variety to the game.
But I find it hard to believe anyone could be tired of the incredible look of the original textures already. I've visited (and would love to live in) the part of the USA that Canyon was inspired by. There's a stark beauty to the desert that soothes the soul. The incredible vistas of the southwest inspire the mind. I always feel like I'm on another planet when I visit. There's a lot of browns, reds, tans, and other earthy shades there. But you also get that sprinkling of greens from the cactii or other brush.. plus the wildflowers of the desert such as the prickly pear cactus and its red blossoms. I don't think I'll ever tire of it.
I'm also against the idea of mods for online (except for RPGs). You load up a new map and there's a 120 MB texture mod attached to it. Every player has to download that mod, unless you have locators turned off, which affect signs... so I won't turn that off. Sometimes it doesn't even load until part way through the map. For a one minute map, it hardly seems worth it in my eyes.
But then, I can't deny how nice some of these look.
