The chat system already used xmpp and could be used by external xmpp clients. Only problem was the password.
But every developer can just read the password from memory and thats how I got it working earlier in any xmpp client.
Really nice to open it up even more!

btw: I'm really concerned about any breaking api changes. Are there any. Is it versioned?

Yep that looks really great and some things of the new design looks promising

Hope these auto websites are generated responsive? I´m tired of bg images that doesn´t fit big resolutions (like here the forum bg image^^)

It has never been officially supported, and we were not strictly following the XMPP protocol, so previous behaviour had some issues. The chat back-end system has been thoroughly reworked, and should allow loads of fun chat-related features.
