General Question on Texture Editing

Hello all,

I bought TM2 yesterday, and since I've found the Tron skin pack by Ignacio I have been trying to make my own skin for the game.

However, it seems that at the very least I do not understand the properties of DDS files (every time I make a DetailsDiffuse.DDS, my car turns extremely shiny - if I edit someone else's DetailsDiffuse, the part that I edited turns extremely shiny). It could be that I am completely oblivious to the whole process, so any help or tips would be appreciated.

Could anyone please point me to the right direction? I haven't been able to find any skinning guides, or DDS guides.
