beginner don't give points to non beginners, they also don't have the energy shield so they are less visible.
It's to avoid fragfest of newbies and let them discover the game quietly.
Aim for the players with the energy shield visible !

ok, thanks, but that brings up another question

What Defines a beginner?

beginner is:
- who has less than 1000 ladder points or
- less than 10 hits in the current mode or
- less than 100 hits and a bad kill-death-ratio

Edit:: Furthermore i would like to suggest not to show the "not a beginner anymore" message to players who haven't been beginners when they joined the server.. it would make more meaningful if it would only be shown to players who just became a regular player and have been a beginner beforehands

I do find this a bit ridiculous, surely this technically means that there's the possibility in a game that there is only 1 non beginner out of say 10 players, so this one player can't score any points apart from by winning outright and capturing the pole, meanwhile the 9 other players get points for every hit and kill, so to an extent in such a scenario, regardless of skill level "closeness" the best player can't stand a hope of winning.

Couldn't another "league" be made in which ONLY beginners can play and no-one else, so they have the oppurtunity to play with people of a similar skill level before going into other games, and when not in this league hits on players- regardless of if they are beginners or seasoned vets count as regular points towards the player who hit them regardless of rank.

I was playing a game just a minute ago when I got this message and I played 5 more minutes of the game before I practically gave up. I got the message, was given no information regarding it and was only told once I was in a game, I wasn't going to leave just to google this message, then I started hitting people and getting 0 points and I rage quit because I killed 3 people in one round and they all took 3 hits to kill and all said +0 points (Which I thought was just a bug) and at the end of the round I was deadbeat last as I'd only scored the nominal +1 point for starting the round!

BINGO!! Exactly the frustration I was having last night when I posted a comment in open beta thread, I can understand giving the newbies a fair chance (even though I didnt get the same when I started) but they took it a bit far, not giving hit points when that's what the game is based on. So I started looking for servers that have no newbies in them.

Yeah this is the reason I stopped playing royal much. There only ever seems to be one server up and half of the time it only has about 2 other people I get points from hitting. There isn't anything more frustrating than hitting 10 shots and getting no points for it. Honestly I'm ok with noobs getting more hps but don't make my score suffer because I'm playing against new people, I didn't make them new. Honestly there isn't that much of a learning curve in this game anyway. I won my 3rd game of royal the first time i plated the game and I have average gaming skills. Its a pretty simple game.

Making it so beginners don't have "energy shields" seems silly too. It makes it obvious who is new at a glance, and enables people to easily pick out new players and kill them for the lulz.

All of this wouldn't be a problem if there were more players though :/

I have to agree, this is a huge annoyance.

While I don’t mind treating beginners with care and giving them some advantage, I dislike how this is making it just extremely hard for non-beginners (which you have to remember can be uber-pro-gamers, but also just “a tiny bit more experienced than beginner” players) to just participate in the game.

On the server I was playing there were, including myself, 4 out of 15 players with a ranking high enough to no longer qualify as beginner. So, when a map starts, there are only 3 valuable targets while there are 11 other players who are barely visible and will still try to kill you. As you cannot see them well, they will probably succeed while you are still trying to hunt down one of those other three non-beginners to get at least some points out of the round. And of course those other three non-beginners will also be targeted by other players, so it’s not very likely that you get to kill them first to get some points.

So, while you try to gain at least some points by rushing to the pole, getting killed in the process by players you cannot see approaching, all other players will gain more and more points while you stay at the bottom of the ranking.

Then about half-time through the map, the other players will finally hit the non-beginner threshold with kills and you can start killing them. At this time though, with the points limit being at 100, you have no chance to get enough points to win the map (unless you are the uber-pro-gamer mentioned above).

So all in all, you’ll be frustrated because:
  • You don’t get many points, even if you are not bad.
  • You keep getting killed by barely visible players.
  • Most of your enemies are barely visible.
  • The only enemies that will reward you with points are probably being killed (by barely visible players) before you get a chance yourself.
So, again, I don’t mind a beginner system at all, I really support it. But non-beginners shouldn’t suffer like this. Beginners are already given an additional life; if you like change it so that the first life won’t give any points while further hits do give points. Or make every hit on a beginner a half point (or every second hit counts) or something like that. Also, make them a bit more visible; often the only hint that there is a player is because the name appears above… Maybe give them an energy shield with half the intensity or something.
