What determines where 3D decals are on surfaces?

I'm wanting to modify parts of Valley so that the forested areas are a little less dense with 3D decals, because the forested areas really make my performance tank. If anyone could help me figure out how this works, I would be very appreciative.

if you want to change game files, it's impossible anyway.

yeah, you can only chose to disable 3D decals in the configuration.

Aw, man.

sorry
The decals are added more or less randomly I think. And either a block has the property built-in or it has not.

If that's how it works, is an option to lower the density of 3D decals possible? That'd be something nice to see in an update.
So, I'll go ahead and add that to my wishlist for update #3.

There is no real option to reduce gradually the amount of decals.
Perhaps only the shader quality setting could have a influence (if the shader is calculating the places for the decals), but that's pure theory.
