[TM2] CONNECTION - maniaplanet thinks I am offline [SOLVED]

After playing TM in various guises (Nations, United, TM2 Stadium) for a few years, since yesterday I cannot play online.
When I launch the game I get a message saying:
You are not online.
You will not be able to connect to an account and use all of the game features.
We recommend you connect to the Internet now.
[CONNECT] [STAY OFFLINE]
Clicking connect just brings me back to the same message repeatedly.
Nothing has changed on my system as far as I am aware, but I have tried the following to resolve this, none of which has worked:
- Reinstalling game by deleting and downloading again in Steam - no change
- Downloading ManiaPlanet client to try and run the game outside of Steam - no change.
- Disabling Firewall and Antivirus - no change
- Resetting router and setting up port forwarding - no change
I am stuck and cannot think of anything else to try.
Very grateful for any help resolving this.

Just to add one other thing - I am using IE and that is not in offline mode (when I searched other users have had a similar problem and it was related to this).
My problem started at the same time as the 10 year free demo launch. Coincidence?

Certainly coincidence.
Did you install anything new before?
Are you running web-intensive applications like messengers, streaming, downloads, virtual drives etc.?
Tools like Mumble and Wuala are apparently preventing ManiaPlanet network connection, if the game is started in second place.
Try to ping all of those servers indicated here:
http://maniaplanet.com/status
Open cmd and execute e.g.
ping mp01.maniaplanet.com

Nothing new installed on this machine and I am very careful about services and processes I allow to run on my computer.
Right now I am in the house on my own - nobody else is connected to the internet. Here is a speedtest net result.
I can ping all servers with average of appox 20ms roundtrip time.
EXCEPT init.maniaplanet.com. All ping requests to this address time out with 100% packets lost.
Why would this be? Would indicate a problem server side but that would affect everyone, surely?

I have just used an online ping test site to test connection to init.maniaplanet.com from elsewhere around the world and it seems to fail everywhere.

A problem with this server despite the maniaplanet website reporting it is OK? Wouldn't this affect everybody if that was what is stopping me from connecting?

I can't ping init.maniaplanet.com either, but I'm able to connect properly to the game.
Would you mind executing
tracert init.maniaplanet.com?
I get a timeoutafter the 8th hop.
Code: Select all
6 31 ms * 13 ms decix.routers.ovh.net [80.81.192.209]
7 22 ms 21 ms 21 ms rbx-g2-a9.fr.eu [91.121.131.130]
8 26 ms * 21 ms vss-5a-6k.fr.eu [178.33.100.71]
9 * * * Timeout.
Perhaps this server has ping reply disabled.

Check your hosts file for things that may be messing up the connection (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) and try another DNS server (Public Google DNS servers: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (secundary)).
Usually your router has a separate firewall, tried turning that off yet?

Nothing in the hosts file, have tried bypassing the router and have tried changing the DNS settings - no change.
It doesn't seem like maniaplanet is even trying to access the net - no activity recorded from the win7 network resource monitor.

Then please check again your IE settings. Make sure the offline mode is not enabled.
And also check the internet connection settings in the control panel.
