Free insert & Others

Hey

This is just hype post for the free insert, because I just realized, with blockmix + free insert + all floating blocks, would make the editor cover the 'basic overall handling'.

In TM the grid space is not so visible because its bigger car and turning takes more space + theres more speed which makes 3-4 blocks of space feel much less.
In SM, its very small man, its 1/20th of single grid space. You can go 360 everywhere you want from that standing point, have instant changes from left to right.

My wish for the free insert grew when i thinked that even with the blockmix, the construction 'pattern' remains same, even if its mixed or not, it will be in the same pattern. The connections might be different with mix, but every block will be at the same spots, which determines the real bone structure of the map.
Like tictac, theres only couple options, because the slots determines placement:

* Simple adjustments, could move to perfect positions:

If nadeo aims for the best creativity, i think improving the editor to the point where mapper can build 'default/standard constructions' will improve alot, we are going forward still (floating blocks & blockmix)
Blockmix will open up many new constructions, but with combination of free insert, it would make the bone constructions better and much more flexible for larger amount of construction ideas.

"you can place any block where ever you need", should be the main standard "tool" of the editor

---------

I'll add these which ive felt missing just if somebody is interested:

- Nucleus 'center piece'

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/728x6 ... 6/nape.jpg

- Angled floating nucleus (1 blocksize piece):

- More angled castle ramp:
https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/720x4 ... 9/jue0.jpg

- Adjustable jump pad (angle & power)
^- this would be really great

- Bigger map template
If i remember right, there was downloadable 55x55 gbx map template for TM at one point. I would love to have bigger map template for SM, because when making siege, royal and other maps where you have to copy sides = it doubles/triples the size, you might be short only by 2-3 block lenght and deleting the 2-3 strips you might lose the whole feel.
So it would be great when find out later that the map is bit too big, you could still have flexibility to go around it and not delete the good stuff.
Maybe something like bigger map gbx template that is downloadable from forums or ingame?
Or in the editor some red lines surrounding the building area, but still can build over the area, it only shows the preferred 48x48 size but still is flexible when needed? Or something..?

- Blocks:
- Normal grid piece that is at the edge of block space (could cover up basic shapes with grid)
- Flat grid floor piece, or any floor that you can see through below. Plastic/Glass floor.

- 'Design' stuff:
In the editor, 90% of blocks are walls, pillars, floors and such, but not really many for design/atmosphere.
Would be great to have some design stuffs and for castle floors specially.

I think the only true 'design/atmosphere' blocks are trees and rocks and they only are for grass,
there are no almost any for castle floors?
In TM Island you have boats and stuffs, these type of stuffs really adds to the overall feel. Also, when you
hide, do you always hide behind the fence or wall, or some real life item, it adds some feel too.

- Some ideas for design stuffs:
Some wood logs?

Generator?
Canister?
The castle era was not very high tech, but i think there are ideas for atmosphere
Maybe some piles of rocks that can be placed on top of castle floor or something..
Moving machine? Slowly spinning wheel or something?

- Fillup items:
Small pieces which can be used to fillup all the holes and places you get stuck. Angled/Curved/Straight pieces for different occasions.

That's impressive i agree with all of what you said.

I can also add (maybe as a suggestion for SM2 :D) that the outside landscape (also called warp) should be modified by the player.

I don't think Free Insert is what the Map-Editor needs.

If you want to try out, what Free Insert is like, you should download a Title Pack with Custom Blocks (like Obstacle TP) and play around with it. In Obstacle it isn't exactly Free Insert, but the Grid is very small.
You will see that you will have maximum possibilities as where to place blocks. -->>BUT<<-- it is really hard to work with. This definitely goes against Nadeo No. 1 rule when it comes to the Editor: Keep it simple and clean.
The next thing that should catch your eye are the missing block clips and block combinations. This is definitely a key feature of Nadeo Editor. The block clips are crucial for smooth block transitions. On Custom Block maps you can see every single edge of a block. A Free Insert would make these functions obsolete as well.

What I would like to see though, would be a smaller grid instead of none at all.
1/2 steps or 1/3 steps would be really beneficial for the editor withour losing the grid dependent features of the editor. That wouldb e a shitload of work though. I don't see that happending.

I agree with UrinStein on this one. Removing the grid from the editor will basically remove that "simple and clean" style that nadeo has successfully obtained. It would be very hard for new players to get in to, and most people will end up building very messy maps. Also, these blocks we have now would not fit together without a grid at all. It might sound nice at first, but I don't think this is a good idea.

I dont think the grid needs to be smaller.
Somehow all blocks work together now and they are linked to eachother. What I mean is... everything feels calculated. You know that you can make a jump because u did that jump a million times before... you see?
+ it feels clean & simple which isnt bad.

The 2 screenshots you showed are awesome and should be realised imo. We need stuff like this and If you browse the forums you'll find more suggestions like these. We need to build upon the existing blocks and add missing blocks. ( and maybe add a new block now & then :) )

What I would love is some sort of decoration items/blocks to improve the look of the maps... preferably something techy with those cool lighting effects SM is know for.
I dont rly like the examples above. A generator? It doesnt fit the style of castle/tech.
