So the main page says that Stadium is unlimited while Canyon and Valley are time limited. However after playing Stadium for a few days, I am now getting the message that your playtime has expired. Is this a bug of some sort or was "unlimited multiplayer" a lie?

The exact text from the download screen was

Free and unlimited multiplayer access to Trackmania² Stadium and Shootmania Storm at the moment!

Free access to Trackmania² Canyon & Valley and all community-created content. Unlimited for 48h after registration. Daily time limit after that.

Please read carefully the message you have cited, as it writes everyhting you need to be aware of.

For all the demo versions, there is of course a time limitation.
First you can play about 2 days without restriction, and after those 2 days you can then play only for 1h per day.
Only multiplayer usage is free for Stadium and Shootmania Storm, and there is no solo campaign and no customization.

I presume you were playing in the solo campaign?

This was while attempting to join a stadium multiplayer session.

And how is it today, if you start only Stadium?
Make sure you are not going on a server that is actually running the "multi-title" setup Trackmania², as this might look as a Stadium server, but it also uses Canyon and Valley, for which 1h daily demo countdown applies.

The server splash screen says Stadium on it, and even in the stadium menu before server selection it gives me the 1 hour countdown. I am suspecting that the fact that at one point I installed the Canyon demo has caused the app to apply the timer to the wrong thing perhaps.

I'm not sure, but I think I have seen similar on a friend's accountrecently, so I fear the 1h countdown is normal.
Let's see what answer we get here from official side.

Well I have created a demo account for a long time. If I want to play Stadium, I can use 90 Minutes from this title. On my super secret project, I can use my title for 60 minutes^^.

EDIT: ok, after some random tests.. I started Shootmania, and the counter freezed, same for stadium, after I restarted the title again? ^^

EDIT: well, the counter is counting^^
