Some random advice if you ever want to do FTP again.

If you wanted to go back to FTP here is what I would recommend.
Disclaimer: The purpose of any game is to make money so not all of this will be popular among normal players but keep in mind my goal here is to propose something that allows as much creative freedom but would benefit Nadeo enough to allow the game to be free. Not to just give players everything they want at Nadeo's expense.
First require server operators pay some fee for the server, even if its only a one time fee, even if its only 5 bucks, this will help keep down excessive server counts and generate SOME income. A cash (not copper, not planets) fee monthly to list the server would also be acceptable. (So long as it did not exceed 15 bucks a month but honestly should only be like 5ish (usd). You could even get really clever and let people configure and launch this dedicated server through the game UI and then all kinds of non-savvy users could pay and host their own servers.
Re-Partner with an add based company for billboards and whatnot in game, I actually thought that was pretty cool. I know this didn't work out long term last time but keep reading.
Make your own map/car/skin/block/texture market for this hypothetical future game and (bare with me) lock the game down so people must use your market. While tracks and cars could cost planets, and you earn planets like LP, you could also buy planets for cash. (Think like Riot Points in League) Even if you wanted to make tracks and cars or skins free... make players buy "Garage Slots" to store cars, since you control the market you have some quality assurance (at least for cars/skins), and the content creators could get a minor kickback in planets. Same with Tracks, maybe give 4 Track slots for storage for free, but charge planets to expand how many tracks you can save. Since tracks could be free, people could play any map they want and then delete it but server owners, map makers, and collectors would buy tons of space to store maps. (even if it was cheap like... 50c per map slot / 5 bucks for 10map save slots) I would easily buy 200+ map slots and probably at least 10 car slots. (so that works out to 110 bucks at least) + 5 bucks a month for my server... see it adds up! That doesn't even account for add revenue. You could also produce and publish numerous paid expanded campaigns on your own.
