Is it possible to play this game?

I just bought Valley, Stadium and Canyon on Steam. I played Sunrise and the Wii version, and figured it would be nice to see newer games in the series.
Unfortunately I can't find a way to play the games. This is the most frustrating gaming experience I've had in many years.
I fired up Valley from Steam, got to a screen that asked me to sign up or sign in. Initially I chose 'offline' but got to a screen that showed only clouds and a few controls. So I signed up and got asked to update the game, at which point I got a message that ManiaPlanet_Skins.zip failed. 'Retry' didn't help, so I chose 'give up'. I got a message 'could not find TMValley by nadeo'. I clicked 'more info' and got to some form of menu with 'channels', 'titles', etc. and a bunch of small windows with clouds at the bottom.
This was on Trackmania Valley, and had an 'Install' button, so I used it, and it seemed to download something. Now on my second try (which goes through all of the above) the button doesn't work. After installing, I got into a screen that has an 'Enter' button (got there now by installing Canyon, since I couldn't get further with the ones I installed before). Clicking it got me a message 'Could not install or update the title's files...'
That's the farthest I can go.
Is the game completely broken or what?
