Recreating Wonderhill

Hi Trackmaniacs! :-)

I’m on a quest to recreate my favorite course of my favorite childhood racing game in Trackmania 2:

It’s a really brilliant track with lots of verticality.

I would love to recreate it as accurately as possible but... that might be tricky and an approximation of what makes it fun to drive would satisfy me as well. Some challenges I encountered:

I own TM2 Stadium, Canyon, and Valley. Which one to make the map in?

- Stadium is probably the most widely owned, so more people would have access to the map
- Canyon has drift mechanics that come most close to original R4 mechanics
- Valley has the environment that resembles Wonderhill most closely

Haven’t decided yet, might do multiple versions... any thoughts appreciated!

My biggest issue however is that the TM2 track editor seems to only have blocks for 90 degree turns? As you can see from the screenshot the original course is much more complex than that, and I think that is part of why it is fun!

As far as I understand I could create custom blocks to implement non-90 degree turns and straights... but that seems tedious (the custom block editor scared me a little bit tbh).

I’d love to hear what your thoughts on this are. Maybe there’s some known workarounds / methods that I’m not aware of from my initial attempts with the editor.

Thanks in advance and cheers!

Your 2 points:

- Canyon has drift mechanics that come most close to original R4 mechanics
- Valley has the environment that resembles Wonderhill most closely

Could be combined by using the Trackmania 2 multi-environment: https://www.maniaplanet.com/titles/TMAll@domino54

You could make a Valley map with a Canyon car!

Although that would stop people who don't have all 4 environments from playing your map, as that is a requirement to play the multi-environment title pack.

The mesh modeler isn't too difficult to learn to be honest, it's worth trying out! Here's a YouTube playlist of helpful mesh modeler videos that might help you out:

Cool thanks!

FWIW I did a quick (lol whole day I been messing with this) attempt for Stadium today, for anyone who wants to try:

Okay I did a version in Canyon that I think is fun to drive!

I uploaded it to ManiaExchange: https://tm.mania-exchange.com/s/tr/219006

Would love to see other replays so if anyone feels like it give it a drift and upload your ghost! <3 <3 <3
