Replacing the default textures with a custom mod permanently

Hello,
Mods are useful when it comes to build a map with one of them, but I am not a mapper. Therefore, I would like to use a custom mod in place of the default mod (ie the default Canyon textures) for a few days, then change back to the original, then use a custom one again, etc.
The point being that I would be able to see the mod textures on every map I play - particularly those which normally don't come with a mod.
I know that it was possible in TMF because I found tutorials [here is the French tutorial]. I tested it with a .zip format mod in TM² and it didn't work. Then I realized there was a chance that most mods are going to come in .pak format from now on anyway, and that it probably changes everything.
So I would like to know if it was even still possible to do; and if it is, how to proceed.
Here is a link for mods if you need to download one in order to try!
If a method is proved to work, I will edit this first post to put the solution in, to make it easier to find.
Thanks. :)
