Suggestion - formats independent of the extensions

I really believe that TM programmers (suggestions are for them) knows what is difference between extension and header. :) And I'll be really happy if they made that small suggestion, even if it will work only on billboards.

I completely support this idea. There's no reason not to use headers for things like video's and images.

I think we made a compatibilty fix before bink was supported

not sure where it is now, but we have big priorities at the moment and will be able to dig more into this type of questions later I suppose. I know we had to make a choice before the stadium beta about this, but we have not yet brought back the former signs ourselves. So, for the compatiblity we replace the bik by dds when it finds the replacement if I remember well the conclusion

No, I think you missunderstanding whole idea of headers. Is not about replacing anything, is about stop looking at file extension. Like in PNG case - you can use PNG on billboards even on TM United but not with PNG extension. You must rename extension PNG into JPG (but it is STILL png but with wrong extension!) and PNG works (different format but TM can handle it!). So why you want to look at extension anyway in other cases? Treat extension as insignificant part of filename. BIK, JPG, PNG and DDS has easy to recognize headers (first few bytes). And... ok, I wrote enough in this topic to understand whole idea (I hope!). Looking for file replacement is much worse than just made proper detection of filetype based on headers. Headers detection method - you must download located files anyway, then just read first bytes. Your idea - you must start looking for alternative files which can slow down whole loading process.

I understand the idea

I suppose we would be able to look for header to make this more agnostic when the creator would like it, to be able to switch from jpg to bik on demand, but can really not make it a priority :/
