Customization in ShootMania

Post by KuroBit »

Now that I've seen quite a bit of ShootMania in action, I'm definitely looking quite forward to seeing how this game fleshes out from now on, but one thing that's stood out like a sore thumb to me is the lack of any mention of any sort of character customization in the game.

Before when I had expressed my concerns about this subject, it was way before any of us had seen how the game played, and I see now that the idea of actual custom models would be very hard for NADEO to implement given the extreme competitive nature of the game and the need to be able to clearly see your oponents. But regardless of this fact, I've never heard of an online fps game that doesn't let you customize anything about your character (other than the symbol on the back of your shield, which I wouldn't even consider actual character customisation, and more of a simple avatar or logo for your character).

I mean, what about all the people who want to play ShootMania who don't happen to be male, white, or have black hair? It would seem very strange for everyone in the world to play as Mr. Clone without any sort of individuality from anyone else.

I know the game is still in early stages, so maybe something like this is already planned, but personalisation is one of my favorite elements about online games like these, and I'd rather be playing as someone I can at least associate with.

Any thoughts or info you have on this subject?

There will probably be some other skins that just change the hair/skin color, I don't see any reason why not. And it's really easy to implement.

This could indeed be very important, cause in CS for example, players of a team chose different skins to be able to recognize each other without having to put their crosshair on their mates.

KuroBit,

Competitive is not an issue for modding here, it is up to the competition itself to set rules. We will tell what will be open and not later. :pil

Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, Battlefield. Basically only Quake and TF a little allow you to change your char, but there you can use console commands to make them all the same.

I suppose I was thinking more about the less realistic war simulator type fps's like Quake, TF2, Unreal Tournament, Halo, etc. which all let you either customize aspects of your character or customize the entire model your character uses.

Also I definitely think there should be an option to force everyone to have the same model if the player doesn't want to see other peoples custom models/characters. But I'm not really sure how much of an issue that's going to be if there isn't going to be a lot of character customization...
