I know money doesn't grow on trees, but why not buy both? They're not that much.

The community for both is about equally active right now, to be honest.

TMUF surely has more diversity of blocks to play with, but a steeper learning curve when it comes to learning to drive the 7 environments. Anyway, you can't go wrong no matter what TrackMania you decide to purchase.

Plenty of fun to be had, even if no one else even played it.

Canyon has better grafics, but with fast settings, it needs same minimum hardware as Trackmania.
You should try TrackMania Nations United to see how it runs on your PC.

But I can tell you this: earlier I had a P4 2GHz, 2GB RAM and a Radeon 3650, and I was able to run TrackMania with 1280x720 and high settings, or even 1920x1200 with low settings, only large maps with lots of blocks caused issues.

Online there are no ghosts, only opponents, and yes you can disable them as well.
But I rcommend you to lower resolution or details then, since some maps are really heayvy.
