More fluid/advanced movement? (like Q3/UT2004)

Post by BobbyTheBuilder »

I am very impressed from the game. But i would like a more fluid feeling, advanced movement like quake or ut 2004 as it gets boring too fast without it.

What about implementing Acceleration, good Rocket Jump, wall jumps or something very new?

And yes i have seen the Video from Gillz.

I just want more air control.

Feels kinda stiff for a fast paced FPS.

Yep. I feel like if you truly want to create a skill-based competitive FPS, Quake 3 and UT2004 are the games to emulate. Right now this game feels like it's TRYING to be that, but isn't quite nailing the movement.

Much as I love the movement as it is now, I do feel like the air movement could use a bit more control, so it's not so easy to know how an opponent is going to move as soon as they go airborne. It does feel fine as is though, if you ask me.

In Quake particularly, your basic movement gives you all the fluidity in motion of a (hip-turning) sack of spuds. Also, if someone wanted to play a game more akin to UT/Q3A...Wouldn't they just go and play those games, or any number of alternatives/clones?

There may be room to refine around preference the motion as it is, but to set out to emulate these kinds of heavy hitters can only ever leave SM seen as second best regard to them. (or to be blunt, a pretender. Who gets excited to play the game that's a bit like one it clearly tried to emulate - it's a bad strategy.)
What's the good of SM even being in the conversation at the same time as these games. This game can forge new ground, and should. In future, other games should look to aspire to SM, and it's success. Not the other way around.

Albeit there would be interesting to see some jump-cancelling move. For example, (theoretically) a gravity push, that instantly start pulling you straight down, intercepting the jump trajectory. This would be some awesome stuff to trick the rails with.

Strafe jump to keep the speed up and better air control.
