[B1.2] Custom crosshairs issues.

Post by winz »

Hello,

The custom crosshairs I draw in paint.net don't seem to correctly transfer into the game.
My resolution is 1920*1080.
If you need to see the crosshairs closer you can just zoom on the picture by pressing CTRL and then using the mousewheel up or down.

http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/6370404pixels.jpg
That's a 4 pixels wide cross (without counting the border)
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/2681056pixels.jpg
That's a 6 pixels wide cross (without counting the border)
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/1807738pixels.jpg
That's a 8 pixels wide cross (without counting the border)

The problem is: there is visually no difference in thickness between the 4 pixels one and the 6 pixels one and at 8 pixels it jumps from too thin to too thick and I couldn't find a way around this. Those crosses also get much larger with the rocket launcher.

Just for the purpose of testing, I tried to make one that is 7 pixels wide (of course it means the cross is half a pixel off the center because the dds files are 256x256 pictures) and the borders end up being literally off for whatever reason:
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/46957 ... Shot04.png
You can see there are missing borders at some sides of the "branches" of the cross.
That very same cross looks like that in my paint: http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/127957smcross.jpg (the pink pixels are just to show the borders are the exact same on both sides and were black for the ingame screenshot)
Oddly enough, the borders appear to be absolutely fine when the weapon is in reload: http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/52539 ... Shot01.png

I saved the dds files in DTX1, DTX3 and DTX5/Cluster fit (HQ), Iterative fit (slowest HQ) and nothing seems to have any effect on this.

The bigger crosses (either larger or with longer branches) don't seem to be getting that border issue for some reason.

Maybe paint.net isn't the right program to use ?

I've tried to solve the problem on my own (I actually have more than 70 crosshairs in my folder, most of them being the same but slightly modified with paint.net :)) but I couldn't find where is the problem is so I'm asking for help!

If anyone has an idea.. thanks in advance!

Try and see if you see a difference if you give all crosshairs the same stroke. 6 and 8 pixel crosshair both have a stroke of 3pixels but the 4pixel crosshair only has a 2pixel stroke. Also try keeping them same size because I'm not sure how the game sizes the crosshair because your 4pixel crosshair is bigger than your 6 and 8pixel.

Edit:
I should also add whatever you draw for your crosshair on your main layer doesn't make any difference, the only thing that makes a difference is what's in your alpha channel. Your main layer can just be filled one colour. Your stroke will only show as the same colour has the rest of your crosshair. You can add greys to your alpha to show parts of your crosshair faded. If you make the cross in your alpha grey and make the stroke in your alpha white this will produce a transparent coloured cross with a solid colour stroke around it.
By the way due to me now having SM anymore I can't be 100% sure of all this info sorry but I'm 90% sure

I'm sorry but you lost me there. I didn't change anything regarding the alpha channels, to be honest, I don't even know how to change it.

But on the 7 pixels cross for example, the whole border was drawn the exact same way without changing anything, how can the border can be seen at some sides of the cross but not at the others?

Your 7 pixel crosshair isn't central, I think that is the problem with this one.

Took 2 other screenshots of the 7 pixels one, this time I zoomed in:

How it looks ingame : http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/3886037pixels.jpg
How it looks in paint : http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/34826 ... npaint.jpg

It looks like it's kinda 'overlapping' a bit as the entire yellow cross is not of the exact same degre of yellow?

Obviously I'm doing something wrong with paint regarding the layers/alpha channels, does anyone know how to fix this ?

EDIT: Even with no border there is still something wrong with it: http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/45408 ... border.jpg What am I missing?

Shouldn't it still look like what is drawn in paint if everything is done right even if off the center?

All crosshairs look fine but for 7 pixel. I just edited it and centered it and now it looks fine but border looks off center when loading now. It's because it's an odd number of pixels, that's all it can be.

Ok, I tried to work around abit by adding a gap between the cross and the border:

Nogap: http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/406284nogap.jpg
1 Pixel gap: http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/8546921pixelgap.jpg
2 Pixels gap: http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/5543392pixelsgap.jpg

Now after adding the gap at the right sides to make it look decent in game: http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/14584 ... screen.jpg
The result in game (zoomed): http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/372135finalcross.jpg
The result in game (unzoomed): http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/35465 ... zoomed.jpg

Obviously this isn't an ideal solution and the crosshair in reload proves that point: http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/96539 ... reload.jpg
