FPS in game < FPS in options

Post by Kyb »

Hi,

FPS displayed in game are slightly lower than that is configured in the options. I set my FPS to 120, and in the game, I'm stuck at 111. And whatever the value of the FPS in the options, there is a slightly lower value in the game.

Thats not an issue with the game..

Setting fps is a way to limit the FPS so that its smoother. For example, if your monitor is 120hz and you set fps to 120, it will look smooth. Similarly if you have an LCD monitor and its 60hz like most monitors, you should set to 60fps.

HOWEVER, if your graphical settings are too high that you already get less FPS than what you set, it won't work, as "setting fps" is only to set a limit.

SOLUTION: Lower your graphics settings.

It has nothing to do with the refresh rate of the screen. When I was playing CoD4, I put my FPS to 250 and I had 250 FPS in the game
And this is not a performance issue, if it were the case, my FPS would not be constant / stuck at 111.

I just tested with Fraps, and it also tells me 111 FPS too, it must come from the game engine.

I second that, the limiter is wrong, it limits FPS to the selected value, minus 7% (approximately).

When I played on my 60Hz screen and set the FPS limit to 60, I got 55-56 FPS.
Now with my 120Hz screen, if I set the limiter to 120 I got 111-112 FPS.

It's not a performance problem, the limiter is wrong, that's all ^^

But now I've set it to 150 and enabled the v-sync and triple buffering, it's much better to me.

and thats not all! 120FPS in shootmania is bullshit! you need to have 300Constant FPS for it to act like 120fps. 120fps is really laggy! dont put 120fps, put it to 500.

When I get 120 FPS on my 120Hz screen I really get 120 FPS.

If you use Vsync you don't need the FPS limiter, as it will cap the FPS to what your screen can render (why do you need 500 frames to be computed when your screen can only display 120 or 60 of them ? depending on the refresh rate).

But if you use Vsync, you certainly need Triple Buffering (you have to enable it ingame each time, this option is not saved yet), because without it, it you have 110 FPS, the vsync will lower the FPS cap to the lower fraction of the refresh rate, in this case, 120/2 = 60, so it will cap it to 60 FPS.

Without Vsync you'll get huge tearing in the frames, which can make it look like it's not 120 FPS, even if it really is, because of many partial frames.
