Generally it´s a good idea but it´s a bit unlucky as well. The people who doing a great job at the community, like the alpha/beta testers who wrote side to side of suggestions and bugs, the guys who doing great tutorials, the map guys, the tool guys etc.., they are all responsible that the game is as popular as it is. And you pull the money from these pockets and then you make the best parts of the game free for everyone. It´s a bit unlucky, isn´t it ?

The joke is that I made the pre-order open and access to the beta because some people were angry not to be able to be in. Off course, invitation only beta would have been better, but maybe unfair to people in the community who really want to be in. And I doubt that for people that are such in the game, that having more people to experience their creation and a better way to experience the game is SO bad as you wish to make it look. Do you think many would have waited for 6 months in order to have 2 modes instead of jumping rigth now? If yes, I am suprised they took the risk to get into a beta. Better to wait for release.

Normally if you go into a beta, you don´t expect the game/parts of the beta getting free. Especially if you pay for the beta ^^ So you should have announced this at the same time as the pre-order started. But as you said, you have done the pre-order because you wanted to enable people, who are not in the alpha/beta, the possibility to join. So finally no offense to you because you have tried to do the best for the community. But still a bit unlucky.

This explanation sounds really reasonable.
Even if I don't want to be pedantic, I have a short question regarding beta access'.
Hylis said that many people were angry not to be part of the beta.
However, he didn't mention the possibility, to register an email to get access to the beta for one week.
So instead of one week, I think this period could also have been until release date.
Everybody had the chance to register for beta (and although it's a open-register-based and not a closed beta then), there would have been the possibility to get all, who want to be in the beta - in the beta. And nobody had to buy the game before release date.
And for the people who missed to register - it's simply their fault.

It's like jojo said - you're doing the best. But still a bit unlucky. Happen's sometimes - I think you know that already.

Elite will be free for anyone. Maniaplanet has various services that has to be limited to only paying version for various reasons such as servers performance or moderation.

I know Jojo it is unlucky, but I really believe that owners will be happy of what the game is going to be until release, the ability to participate to the beta as well as the version at release. So, it is unlucky, but at the end, I think they will be happy. So, it is temporary unlucky I think ^_^

Macximilian, when you game is in beta and that you want to make many evolutions, you don't have a mean to support access for everyone. People also can be aware later that the concept exist and would like to enter. We made a 7 days beta since we did not knew what would be the status after. We launch the pre-order after since the game was working. Today, I would do more 1 month of beta than 7 days since it is more stable. However, I do not want to use the beta as a demo tool since I really think the game will benefit of the work we are doing at the moment. Too many or not enough people in beta are two problems. We are trying to find the right balance and will resume more invites a little later I think.

I think some pepole misunderstood me.

The game is great and you`re doing a great job in developing, etc...

But it sounds really weird. We paid for the Beta and now we hear that many parts of the Beta will become free... Of course the people who pre-ordered the game got an earlier access to the game, but you have to regard that it was the Beta period of the game and not the "full functional version". Like someone else in this topic wrote: It`s just a bit unlucky for the people, who are competetive players or editors or the people who did report bugs and did a great job in reporting bugs in the past.
Of course it`s your oppinion at what time you announce innovations, but that was a really inconvenient time to announce the free Elite and Royal version.
