unranked and ranked

How to change myself from unranked to ranked?
i think i hit a button when i pressed multiplayer before i could see what it said

play some races and earn some LP (ladder points)?

You have to play multiplayer games and atleast finish once to get LP (LadderPoints). The rankings are based on this. And the message you saw when you clicked on multiplayer was probably a warning about images you use in the game (avatar) that could be offensive and that you have responsibility for that (not 100% sure, but something like that).
