Will SM use Steam Workshop to determine next official maps?

Post by dreammyw0w »

Will Shootmania use the steam workshop ( which is AWESOME ) to determine next official maps?
I know mania-actu might not be happy because they usually handle this, but the quality of the maps is a priority.

Steam workshop is perfect to adjust maps. You can comment on those maps, give suggestions. The mapcreator can add those suggestions & reupload his map.
If a player launches his game, the map will automagically be updated on his PC.
This system is sooooooooo good & better maps will come out of it for sure!
Mania-actu does not offer any of this.

PS : pls dont underestimate the importance of maps. You can have an awesome game but without good maps its nothing... ( there is a discussion going on in a different thread about maps. You should read it too )

Please consider using the workshop for official mapmaking!

( when i launch the game i get this progressbar telling me 'updating workshop files' so I guess Nadeo will use it! Im happy )

The problem is only player who use Steam can vote and Steam cannot be mandatory for the choice of "official" maps.

well...
is there an alternative? The workshop works soooooooo well.
Everyone plays the same version of the map always... and it all happens automatically.
This system will produce better maps for sure...

How its done now is 'bad' ( i mean it can be better ) There hardly is any testing phase, no room for discussions or feedback.

My opinion is that AT LEAST the workshop should be used because more people will be aware of these new official maps... and thus more people will vote for them. Any vote counts right?

Any votes count right but the objective isn't to have 100 000 votes (for example) but have the vote from people interested by the mappack. It will be better in long term.

Use Steam has some other problems : the Workshop is a product from Valve and can evolve (good or bad), the community hasn't the control of the system, you vote on each map independently (you can vote only for 1 map for example), we can't create some collections (April Mappack, July Mappack...), moderate the proposal... I think Nadeo or the community need to have the entire control of the system and not be dependent of a system from an other company. It's like to use the Facebook login system, it's good like a possibility but bad if it's the only system (It's my opinion imo).

I think about "the best" system for the mappack but I haven't found it for the moment and it doesn't exist currently. I have some ways to approach my best system but it requires times, tests, motivated person, see the defaults...

No control with steam workshop?

You can make categories. You can create a category like "Official maps for summer 2013"
Nadeo can have its own section for their maps.
You can even seperate maps per gamemode ( elite, royal , etc etc )
You can subscribe to authors.
Ive used this system. There are a lot of possibilities. Trust me.

And yes i said that every vote counts, but the most important thing in my previous post was that maps can evolve before they are released. Maps can be adjusted with proper feedback & suggestions.
This works perfectly in Steam.

I really dont see any reason we shouldnt do this with steam. Why create new tools when there are alrdy good tools to use? Nadeo can use that time to fix/add other things

Anyways let Someone of Nadeo respond^^

I have tested the Workshop for Portal 2 for example, I know some things on it but for example is it possible to create a category where I can add maps in it (manually, me and some moderators) and not only my maps? We need to control on when an author can update his map (no all the time, download the file (not ingame but the Gbx to create servers... I don't know how it will work) when we want, not to asking each time to add the file, can contact directly the user by mail and other things ...

One possibility is only moderators can upload the map but it's not a good solution for the maintenance.

I don't think Nadeo will create and manage an official mappack and will let the community choose and manage themselves.

But the thing is the need to use Steam is bad (the majority don't use Steam for ManiaPlanet) and to be dependent of the evolution of the WorkShop.

Mani-actu, drakonia, esl etc could develop an ET style selection system based on many criteria with some competitive player and some fun players 50-50 to select the new maps

I mean... Like this http://www.et-generation.com/?dlink=mapfeedback
But in SM :p

imho
