Official race. 5min wait. What?

Post by Valle79 »

I've tried to look at this in a positive way, but it's just not working. What on earth was Nadeo thinking?

Here we have a game that's all about getting the fastest time. You can try as many times as you like. You can instantly restart, either from last checkpoint or from the very beginning. And quite frankly you'll need to, because one little slipup and your record attempt went flying out the window, or off the track as it were. And this happens even when you've played a track a large number of times, you're a split second late on a turn and whoops there we go. So basically you'll want to try again a lot.

And then they impose a 5-min delay on each attempt at an official record. Why on earth would you do that? This has to be the dumbest gaming decision I've seen in years! Please, please go back to the old way of costing coppers, erm, planets, instead of this. Or let us choose between the two. Or something.

this change was already discussed in this forum, and it seems most people like the 5min better.

search for it in the forum and you will find these discussions.

Yeah it helps for overall skill. IF your highly skilled your likely to get a really good time, any run, even if you have 1 chance.

If your completely crap you could just spam and spam resarts and get that lucky run.

If you could do an official time every run it wouldn't just be about skill and who can perform well 99% of the time, it would also be a lot more about who has the most time to spam and spam again!

Gold, silver and bronze medals are all about prefecting your runs, and once you have a lot time's, and perfected them, you should beable to pull off one of your best time's on an official run.

For me my official times were a very good example of how well I was doing. Lets say my best was 30 seconds on a run, and my official time came in at 30.2 and I then practiced that run loads and loads more, my best came down to 28, my official would be very close to 28, very slightly above or very slightly below! Improving alongside my best and always being very very close to it!

Personally I wouldn't like it if I could just spam and spam official runs, it wouldn't be that much of an example to me and how well I could do, more how well I could get lucky!

Just me 2 cents! :)

@medseven: Exactly. :thumbsup:

For the rest, I think it's not necessary to reopen an old discussion, so

I did search the forums a bit, and to say that most people like it would be a stretch. From what I could see most people actually dislike it. It just seems a bit silly to me. I've just gotten the game, so I'm starting with the A tests, and since I've played the original Trackmania a wee bit, it usually takes me 2-3 attempts to get the gold. And then I have to wait to get an official time...I don't really care about getting the best time ever on each test now, I just want to get a "good enough" official run. And the waiting is a bitch. :(

For the longer races later on it's less of a concern. I mean, if an attempt at the track takes over two minutes then the waiting period is basically two attempts. On the shorter ones though, ugh.

medseven says it helps for overall skill, which I can agree with, up to a certain point. Being completely crap and spamming still wouldn't work, because unless the player has some skill no amount of luck will get him a good time. Hell, he'd probably not get the gold time in the first place, thus unlocking the official mode. Then you say that if you could spam, it would be about who has the most time to spam. Uhh...the wait means it takes longer, so those that have the most time will win out on that :P

In the end I see your point, I just think they could have done it differently. I think they fucked up on this one.

YonCan: I do enjoy the game, playing online. The singleplayer bit mostly has me frustrated though. And when a game is more frustrating than fun then, welp, screw that. Guess I'll stick to online, and pop in the occasional single player.

I think the 5 minute timer is the best solution to official times. I dislike greatly tieing any online currency system to official races. Never cared for the copper system. I don't particularly care for planets either, fortunately they tend to only be used for skins. At the end of the day, I think most players do in fact agree that the 5 minute timer is best.

The official record system for solo mode is a bit more like rounds mode is online. Every official run matters and so you better not mess it up. It's much more thrilling. But of course if you're not a consistent driver... it can also be more frustrating... just like rounds.

I supported the new system when it was introduced nearly 2 years ago, and I haven't changed my stance. I still think it's the best solution. It also prevents people from blowing all their planets in one place as easily (as I did with my coppers many times).

---

I think the old topic about the 5min timer is in an old subforum that was recently hidden during the forum reorganization. So it's no longer accessible. It was like a 30 page topic though, and there was a lot of people voicing their approval for the system, and probably an equal or greater number of people who who were disapproving of it. The topic was born right after the Canyon solo campaign came out and everyone had a knee-jerk reaction to the idea of a timer. The topic quickly died down though and it really hasn't appeared as a hot topic ever since then. I'd be curious how many of those original naysayers may have changed their opinion, now that they've had a couple years to get used to it.

Considering that Stadium players are new to this system, I suppose we can let this discussion continue a little while before locking the thread. I will say that it's probably quite unlikely that Nadeo will change the system though, or they would have already done it during these past two years.

Good point :) And the Nadeo leaderboard just went live recently. The Stadium campaign tracks will probably be posted after TM2S is released.
