The problem with the people complaining here, is that they want to use the maps they have done, or the maps their friends made, in most cases.
I like the rule "Big competition maps", because it gives a line to follow when you select your maps for the RoC. It doesn´t mean the map needs to be hard, ESL - Sunlight for example is far from being a hard map. It means you have to select a map in the same style used in ESWC or Gamers Assembly, but doesn´t mean you have to choose only maps from these tournaments.
Just go to Mania Exchange and you will find lots of good maps that suits RoC "competition" style, and you will also find easy ones that are good maps and will fit into RoC.
I have the same opinion of the ladder moderators, some Falchi_davide maps used in RoC, for example, are not in the competition style. If they were validated before, I believe it was because only Cerovan tested the maps, and we all know how Cerovan doesn´t have much time to spend on RoC. Now we have moderators that can really test the maps, and this is the reason for previous validated maps to be unvalidaded now(not anymore it seems).
If some players want to have freedom to play their maps, do it on a normal ladder server, call your friends and hf. In RoC is good to have more specific and controlled rules, and map selection as well.
