Registering Steam keys

Post by Macgta »

Hi,

I have a small issue regarding the Steam/Normal versions of TM2. I currently own TM2 Canyon and Valley from the Maniaplanet Metaboli store (The place it takes you when you buy it from the Maniaplanet site, I think it goes through Metaboli.) My friend bought me TM2 Stadium on Steam, Which i have not yet registered. I did post a while back about whether or not it's possible to use Steam keys on the non-steam version of the Maniaplanet client and i was told it isn't possible, But it is possible the other way around, So i might try that instead (Use my Canyon/Valley metaboli keys to redeem the game on Steam, So i have the full collection on Steam.).

I have a few questions about this before i do this and encounter issues (I'll try to explain this as best i can.). Since i have Stadium on Steam, I'm going to download/install it, Launch it then log into my Maniaplanet account, Which i presume will "activate" the game. I'm then going to put my Canyon/Valley keys into Steam's key registration dialog and download/install those. Since i already own Canyon/Valley and they are already associated with my Maniaplanet account, Will registering the games twice cause any issues? The other question is if i'll need to make a new account for the Steam version of the games or can i use my existing Maniaplanet account.

Without sounding too picky, I'd ideally like a response from someone from Nadeo, That way i know it's official.

Thanks for any advice.

Do you mind getting a less official answer from a forum moderator?
I you don't like the answer, you could still ask and wait for official confirmation. :)

At least a part of a answer I can give you:
You should definitely use your existing ManiaPlanet account if you want it to contain all games together.
As you certainly have noticed already, there is a difference between key activation and key usage.

A key can only be activated for one ManiaPlanet account, to which the key gets bound to. You cannot activate the same key on different accounts.

However it is possible to use (or say: to indicate) already activated keys to the Steam version, in order to allow downloading and installing it.

And you're right, a key purchased in Steam gets automatically activated there.
I would first use the already activated game keys in Steam (Canyon, Valley) to make them working there, and only then try to activate the Steam key for Stadium. Just to avoid or solve possible installation and runtime issues (like firewall messages) that could hinder the proper Steam based activation.

Due to manual transfer procedure of the newly sold keys between Nadeo and Steam, there might be a delay of up to several week until a key can be used for either system.
This means the key you have purchased in Steam might not be useable on the player page directly now, but it should work there later somewhen.

In the past, I have purchased my keys in the regular ManiaPlanet store (Gamesplanet, Metaboli), and later I could use them without problem with Steam.
The other way, what you intend to do, I did not try yet, but I think it should work.

One recommendation I have though: Please do a backup of your existing personal ManiaPlanet data (in your documents folder ManiaPlanet).

OK, That clears a few things up; I have googled this and got pretty much the same response, But this seems about right.

The only "link"s i can't make are how the Steam build of the MP client registers the key instantly, And also how you "link" your Steam account to your MP account. Is this all done on first run or is it a feature in options/settings of the Steam version? (Actual game and/or MP launcher)

Also thanks for the help, When i said i wanted an official response, I kinda just meant i wanted an elaborate response that explains it properly :)

Just bought valley on Steam sale, got the steam cd-key, but can't activate trough Maniaplanet! (I currently own Canyon, and Stadium.) Anyway, I didn't get any warning, that Maniaplanet, and Steam keys are incompatible with each other. This is a serious issue, and need to be fixed.

Keys purchased in Steam can't be used directly in ManiaPlanet standalone right after the purchase, there is a delay caused by manual transfer of the keys between Steam and Nadeo.

You have to install the game in Steam, launch it, and then use your existing ManiaPlanet account to let Steam and ManiaPlanet activate the key there.

Oh, OK, So Steam keys CAN be used in the standard MP client, You just have to wait a while?

yeah. But I can't tell how long. Actually there are end of year holidays, so it might take at least one week more.

Actually the Steam keys are automatically bound to the Maniaplanet account when you first connect to your Maniaplanet (or you create one) via the Steam version.
Then you're free to use the standalone Maniaplanet client to launch the game if you want but there is no other way to use a Steam key.

@bld: I don't understand what you mean by Maniaplanet and Steam keys are incompatible with each other because you can use your Maniaplanet key on your Steam account and you can use your Maniaplanet account with a Steam key.
