My statement to some people's behaviour

Post by Soprah »

Hello Maniaplanetarians,

After daily reading of this forum, following the developing process & releases of other games with it's sometimes negative comments of players which are very similar to some on this forum, I came up to one basic concept:

Generally, it is always the same process before and shortly after a new release of a update or an environment:
1. A new update/environment is announced, mostly with a certain date (Here I have to say that the game developers usually don't mention an exact release date, because things might change or some unexpected issues come up, so they tend to say that the release will be in a certain period of time, e.g. ''Q1 2015" )
2. The release date is postponed and the community is splitted into two sections:
a) The impatient community, who immediately complain of the postponement
b) The patient community, who don't care about the postponement and don't feel any ''negative emotions''. They keep calm because they know that unexpected things might come up and the release must be postponed to ensure that the player have fun playing when the update is released
3. The game developers may feel under pressure due to the impatient community and as a consequence, they rush things.
=> The end result: An unfinished release date version which contains plenty of bugs, not working features or as now, not working servers

To sum up the behaviour of some people:
On the one hand, the most people would like to have the update released as early as possible. On the other hand, people would like to have a completely bug free release date version.
Doing pressure but at the same time demanding an entirely perfect product, is a bit contradictory, isn't it?

Additional aspects to updates, bugs etc. :

1) Games will be never bug free!
I know, this phrase has been mentioned so often so far, that you probably can't see it anymore, but it is a matter of fact that games will be never bug free. We have to live with that. This is compareable to human beings: We will be never perfect, we can only improve ourselves but we will never be able to reach the level of perfection. As your parents or grand parents teached you ''If we would be perfect, we would be robots"
1.1) Especially betas will be never bug free!
We are actually in the Open Beta of the third update and instead of accepting that the purpose of betas will be always to test something and find as many bugs as possible, people start complaining again.
2) Game developers have to set priorities!
A decision might be ''Shall we either try (I used intentionally the word ''try''. Explaination in the next aspect!) to fix the bug or shall we rather publish new content/features?" Each job of the world will always contain hard decisions and one side will be always ''disadvantaged''.
3) There is no guarantee that a bug will be ever fixed!
In the previous aspect, I used the word ''try'' , because there is no guarantee that a bug will be ever fixed. Some bugs are such complicated that it is very difficult to say ''Show me the bug, I'll fix it''. So shall the game developers spend endless time to fix one or several bugs, even if they aren't sure that the bug will be ever fixed, or shall they rather focus on new content? There is no ''one solution'', as I said in the previous aspect.
4) Their decisions have deeper reasons than you might think!
As I mentioned in the previous points, the decisions of the game developers always have deep reasons which we - the players - might don't realize in the first place. So please don't immediately start complaining when for example one bug wasn't fixed in the last update.

There are probably thousands of more things we have to consider, but I personally regard these as the most important
We can be sure that the game developers think about each step in their developing phase very carefully because they all aim for one goal: To satisfy the community :thx:

I can understand you guys... You are eagerly waiting for the new update, because you know, that this update will definitely improve the game and increase the fun factor and then you read ''I am sorry, but due to several things we have to postpone the release of the update". I feel like you at this moment. Huge disappointment, discontentment, frustation comes up.
But we have to overcome our bad emotions and understand the situation of the game developers, as I've wrote this little text before I began to write this topic:

My intention of this topic is, that hopefully all players will finally comprehend the difficult situation of the game developers now and keep calm & patient and don't do pressure to the developers anymore. Why? It's easy to answer: If we let the developers do their things and don't put the heat on Nadeo, they are able to polish their release version as much as possible. Who would benefit? We! Because then we are able to enjoy the at least 90% bug free release version.

By the way, I don't use any direct source when I say in this topic ''People always complain'' because if you would use a quote of one certain guy, people would start blaming on him and I don't want that.

And notice this: Please please please don't regard this is as any personal attack, I just would like to clarify the situation.

Thanks for reading this long text

Greetings,
Soprah

Hmm

If we are patient and don't care about delayed updates and then we have nothing to bigger number of players(e-sport community) then we are dissapointed :D

In Maniaplanet there are several groups of players:
- Playing for money (stream, youtube, e-sport)
- Playing for fun (don't care about updates, casuals)
- Making stuff(more working than playing)
- noobs and haters(Playing to troll, Quake fans)

Nadeo can't release new features/fix bugs for every group. Studio is not big as activision.

summary
Please be patient
My Gamemodes:
MP4 - Countdown, Firefight
MP3 - Reduction, Overload, Flashpoint, Territory, SM Race, Escape
MP2 - Search & Destroy, Oscillation, Instagib

Yes, there are without doubt more groups of players. I just wanted to keep it easy to understand my message :)

Yes, this is definitely the best and shortest summary. Being patient is the key

This reminds me largely of this, except the situation is usually a bit less severe. :)

btw, I don´t think that the non-compatibility of old servers is a bug.

It is really similar yes
It isn't as serious as my post appears to be, because there aren't that much complaints about the postponements. The intention is: If some people feel disappointed, they shall consider the aspects I've mentioned in my statement, before they start complaining

I'm not totally agree with you

Yes, we shouldn't do pressure on game devloppers but
it's normal for me to see some complains by players.

I'm here thanks to your message here:
http://forum.maniaplanet.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=27621
So i'll answer using this topic and also this topic :
http://forum.maniaplanet.com/viewtopic.php?t=27568

Like some players, i see less players on matchmakings and i think it's normal for some players to be anxious when they see their favorite gamemode with less players and it's normal for them to alert Nadeo, to say : "You are in the wrong way, you are removing suddenly all those people who animate the Elite gamemode since last october".
And if Nadeo don't answer to this, it's absolutely normal to warn again Nadeo because they are anxious so it's not a bad point. They just want to inform Nadeo of the problem (I never said so many times the word "normal" in one topic  )

For this second warn, it's normal to see players complaining and furious because they don't want to see players leaving the game so they want a reaction from Nadeo and sometimes be angry it's the better way to show to Nadeo that somes things are wrong ^_^

Finally all of us want the better for maniaplanet ;)
Someone complains for nothing but some others complains and they have the merit to be heard.

In my opinion, the author of this topic : don't have any arguments, any suggestions that could help Nadeo but don't mean that he don't have the merit to be heard because it's true i think : We have less and less people on Elite matchmakings and Nadeo should react. Not by doing a quick update but for example prevent concerned players by creating a news ingame entitled "Welcome to ManiaPlanet 3 Open Beta : Click here for more information" and when the player click, he is redirected to a post of Hylis which
- explain there plans or
- explain that we are in Open Beta to rassure some players and also avoid topics plenty of rage
- explain some features of the Universal Demo
- contain a FAQ eventually

To sum up all i want to say: Yes players often complains but they sometimes doing this to react Nadeo but i'm agree with you Soprah, many people simply complain and it don't help :)

I'm using my smartphone to publish this post so i've made it quickly and with some mistakes

Impressive post for a smartphone

I also think it's useless and counter productive to try to put a stress around. It's mainly because I have a plan and unless it's done, I have little reason to stress. But at the same time, you are quite right that some players can stress because they don't see it clearly enough, and that's my fault. So, I will explain a little, since I think that the next step is quite easy.

June 2014 plan - The universal demo

The goal here is to have more fun and more friends.

More 'fun' modes
Why: the only demo mode, Elite, is too competitive for many.
Short answer: the universal demo
Long answer: It's already impressive to see so many people to play in a competitive mode in France, and it's probably one of the reason why it was the FPS with the most team at the Gamers Assembly. But how many care about playing a FPS for competition? This is why that there is a need of mode 'fun' modes, and that these modes are available in demo. We are working on our side, but the 2.0 approach is the key. For example, a CTF can please more to some players that Elite. And in the end, the cool thing is that it could then bring more people to like the competition, and Elite as well.

More friends
Why: main reason to play on long term is to do it with friends
Short answer: universal demo
Long answer: It's difficult to invite a friend to discover Maniaplanet today. Either he buys the game and follow your instructions, either he plays Elite with the still to fully rebuild matchmaking (better technology now, but younger than the previous one) So, once the universal demo release, the welcome should be better, and with an easier access to 'fun' modes thanks to the Store. The 2.0 approach and the store can become of a great attractiveness to test and welcome friends to discover stuff, for free.

And this is just the next step. I can not talk of the one after, but it's obvious that there is one after. Our goal is to build the most popular FPS, and long term is our best ally, since even if it's really long to make 2.0 & esport, I am quite sure that it's a right path. And I believe that players are stressing because they so much know how much this path is cool, and that they want to see it succeed. But I can tell that Ubisoft is really behind us to make it happen on long term. And this is why the dev team is bigger than ever.
