[Debate] tri-dot-laser VS one-dot-laser

Post by fleo »

I'd like to have some opinions about the three-dot-rail. Many players tell that they don't like it, so we (Dreammyw0w, Xen0m and myself) started creating a one-pixel-laser. The feeling seems really good with this new weapon, but SM has clearly not been developed for it. I explain myself:

Let's take elite to talk about rail as it's in this mode the precision seems to be the more important. There are the advantages and the drawbacks we raised with this new custom laser:

As attacker, it feels great to have an improved accuracy:
+ you can hit from far (we limited the range to 150m).
+ you can hit a defender badly hidden behind something
.

As defender, it feels quite bad because you get eliminate more often:
- you have to be very careful to hide, you can't let a pixel of you visible. That means it becomes useless the hide behind the pole as the attacker can fire through it.
- we have to test it more to be sure about that, but I guess that's weird to have a very precise weapon, when we're playing with high speed moves and animations of the character. That's a non-sense to say that your shot can hit a pixel of a player when the player isn't really there because of animations and lags...but I have to say, I can't see why that'd be worse than with the classic rail.

As we said, sometimes images talk better than words so take a look a this screenshot to see what I'm talking about. A shot with the classic laser missed by 20cm, and the custom rail hit without moving the crosshair ofc. I think everyone will agree: 20cm of difference is huge!

You should also know that we set a tiny radius of this rail (its kind of hitbox) to have it the more accurate possible. That lets the possibility to increase its radius to make a weapon allow to hit from far but not through the pole for instance. It'd be a kind of one-big-dot-laser ^^

We'll make some tests to know more about that, and I'll let you know when we'll have this weapon on a server. We'll probably test is tonight on one or two EliteAlternative servers.

Please let your opinion :D

Yeah, We created a laser together and it's not 100% finished, but the playstyle & accuracy is just incredible.
When you aim correctly = Always hit. Its absolutely amazing for the attacker.

For defenders its a different story :p

I invite everybody to connect to the elitealternative servers and try it out for urselves.( Make sure you dont use the classic rail. Press 2 to change weapon or scroll )

( the servers will be updated soon, with the new laser. )

It could be interesting to limit the usability of the laser in very log distances by flying time. Maybe the laser could even slow down over distance to leave the overall gameplay in short distances untouched.

This sounds great. Are the servers getting populated? I would like to come give it a try.
