DirectX Error Message at Start - Oculus "Direct to Rift" Bug

Post by Balmung »

Hi,

I have following Problem generally with TM² (Canyon, Stadium oder Valley).

When I start the Game I get every time this Error Message:
---------------------------
DirectX initialisation failed
---------------------------
DirectX 9.0 initialisation failed !

'Line 2731, CreateDevice : D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE'

Please check if this version of DirectX is properly installed properly on your computer.
All my other DX9 Games working perfect. I have already installed DX9 new with all Updates (Full Install), didn't help.

I use Windows 8.1 Pro and a NVidia GTX780 (Driver 344.11) on a Intel i5-2500k based System. News is only the Graphic Card. Some Weeks ago TM² works perfect. It's the Steam Version with todays Update.

Logfile from Debug Version: http://pastebin.com/aTB5FT03

Edit: It is the Oculus Rift DK2 Direct to Rift Mode that cause this Problem. Even when MP is not set to Oculus Modus.

When I switch to Extended Desktop Mode or switch the Rift complete off (Power Button on the DK2), than MP start as it should.

When I switch to Direct Mode and the DK2 is in Standby (orange Power LED), than MP crashes with the posted Error Message.

Close the Oculus VR Configuration Tray Tool or switch it there to "Pause Service..." didn't fix the Problem.

HELP! Game suddenly won't start!

Post by Heids »

Hello,

Looking for a little help as to how to fix the issue I have with being unable to start the game. Been playing since the beta with no issues, but just the other day, the game fails to start. I get the following error (spelled and worded exactly as listed below):

--------------------------------------
DirectX 9.0 initialisation failed !

'Line 2731, CreateDevice: D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE'

Please check if this version of DirectX is properly installed properly on your computer.
----------------------------------------

I've tried:
Uninstall and reinstall the game
Verifying game cache in Steam
Running the DXSETUP executable in the SMStorm\Support\DirectX folder

None of that resolved the issue. Any ideas how to fix this?

System Info
I7-4820k processor
16GB RAM
GTX 780 Ti SLI
Windows 8.1

Thanks in advance for any assistance!!!

Thanks for the suggestion, but that didn't help.

I seem to have figured out what was causing my conflict. Same issue as you (See my post above) but I got SM Storm to work again. By chance do you have an Oculus rift? I noticed that when I started SM, the blue light for the Oculus camera briefly turned on and then quickly off again. I unplugged the camera USB cable from my PC and now SM works again. Hopefully your solution is as simple as mine!

Same problem here. GTX 980, Windows 8.1 64bit with Oculus Rift.

If I change the Oculus Rift to Extended Mode, the problem disappears.

So it seems Direct Mode is not supported by Trackmania?

Yes, your are right. It is the Oculus Rift DK2 Direct to Rift Mode that cause this Problem.

Edit: all here have Windows 8.1? No one with Windows 7 here with that Problem?

Could you test if this issue is specific to Windows 8.1 + Oculus + DirectToHMD + D3D9_application ?

For instance take the "Oculus Unity demo build with the latest Oculus SDK (0.4.2)"
launch "Win_OculusUnityDemoScene_DirectToRift.exe" (without the "-force-d3d11" option to stay in D3D9)

And post here if it's working.

Thanks

Well, at least on my system, i've had no luck with the combination of Windows 8.1 + Oculus + DirectToHMD + D3D9_application.

Tested "Win_OculusUnityDemoScene_DirectToRift.exe" without the "-force-d3d11" option and the rift stays black while my monitor displays the demo scene (rift styled).

Same thing can be achieved in Trackmania when you suspend the rift (in direct mode), start Trackmania, power the rift, detect and switch to tm-hmd mode.

It seems to be a problem with the oculus runtime/driver.

Another problem:
If I play Trackmania in Extended Mode, there is a lot of stuttering when I move my head, regardless of which quality/performance setting I use.
Is there an option to show ingame fps while in tm-hmd mode?
I suspect Trackmania drives the rift only in 60hz while using extended mode.
Tested with a nVidia GTX 980.

The stuttering reminds me of Unity games in extended mode, but started through "*_DirectToRift.exe", which suffer from the same problem.

Thanks in advance.
