Is your language similar to some other?

Post by archmagelord »

I am Slovakian, and Slovak language is very similar to Czech, everyone from the 2 countries understands the other language without studying it, most of them can actually speak it too. So I am asking you to write what language are you speaking and if it is so similar to some other just as Slovak & Czech ;)

Hoj :)

Well, in Holland the people speak Dutch, and it is almost the same as the language that is spoken in the north of Belgium, and South African is also very similar, although a bit more different.

Well, I speak German.

So do the Austrians and the Swiss, although they also speak French or Italian.
I understand Luxembourgian (is it called like that?) pretty good; their official language is German, though. I don't know if Luxembourgian is only a dialect or a real language...
Furthermore, I can more or less understand written Dutch, but there are some problems in doing so.

Hungarian has the same roots with finnish and some very old and past languages. This language family is quite big and many living and past languages belong to it.

But, since 1000 years (cca) FIN and HUN went too far from each other.

An example:

Vivid fish in winter swim under the ice.
Jään alla talvella elävät kalat uiskentelevat.
Jég alatt télen eleven halak úszkálnak.

Topic is too big, so if u have interest, check this ENG site on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finno-Ugric_languages

As swedish uses around ~30-40% the same words than german (if they not written the same, they sound the same in the pronunciation) and the gramma is pretty easy compared to german, it's pretty easy to read swedish texts, even though i suck at understanding spoken swedish ;)
And if you are able to read swedish, then it's pretty simple to understand written danish or norse.

Danish is quite close to Dutch too, written Danish is almost understandable for me, enough to follow the "red line" of a text.

I live in France now, and in Quebec (Canada) they speak French too, but like Dutch and South African it has grown apart since a long time.
It is quite funny to see words that haven't been used in the languages "home country" since a very long time, that are still very common words in the other countries.
