Black screen with white box problem

So I bought Trackmania 2 Stadium a couple days ago in the Steam Sale, and I played about an hour total over the past 2 days. It's worked flawlessly.

This morning I go to play it and I only get a black screen with a white box when I launch the game. I can then move the mouse around the screen and I hear the noises that the game makes when you hover over the different menu buttons.

I've tried different visual settings, resolutions, windowed/non-windowed, etc.

I tried disabling DirectPlay and re-enabling it and that didn't fix it. I've reinstalled the game a couple of times.

I've been really liking the game and I'd love to play more, but I can't get past this problem.

Any help? I'd hate to return the game. I don't want to have to wait until the next Trackmania to get my Trackmania fix.

GTX 980ti
16gb ram
1TB SSD
Windows 8.1

Just tried that and it unfortunately didn't fix the problem.

Did you update your video drivers in between? Perhaps automatic update by Windows Update, or your video driver panel?

Search for the file Default.SystemConfig.Gbx in your Maniaplanet user data folder, and delete it. It will be created again.
Normally the problem should be gone then, if not, we will search further with you

There was no video driver update at that time, and also I checked Windows Update history and there were no updates around that time.

So I deleted that file, restarted Trackmania, and the problem still persists. Just the same black screen with a white box.

Please check your firewalls and antivirus if it is not blocking Maniaplanet.
Also try to lauch the game in windowed mode (not fullscreen).

Neither of those did anything.

I'm assuming I'll have to return it at this point, it seems like I've done all of the random fixes that I'm finding on the internet. I'll give it another day or two though.

Is there a release date on the next trackmania?

If you run the configuration app, and go to advanced configuration, video, which video chip and which video memory is listed there?

You could still try the regular standalone version of the game, provided you still have access to you maniaplanet account: https://player.maniaplanet.com
There you can download the full setup which does not need Steam.
And then you can use the debug version (see link in my signature) that writes some more information in a logfile.

The next title for Trackmania², Lagoon, is announced not with a fix date, for somewhen next year.
And the PC version of the console game Trackmania Turbo is announced for the end of this year, more previsely around the 27.11.2015.

One odd thing I am noticing is that in that Display tab in the Advanced Settings configuration page is that it does list the correct video card (Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 Ti), but for memory it only lists 3080 Mb. The 980ti has 6GBs of memory.

Could that mean anything?

And also I did just try the standalone option from the website and it's no different. Same issue.

Looks like DirectX doesn't use the primary device for it's viewport. Do you use a second monitor, have a second (internal) video card active, a virtual reality device connected or do you use tools that emulate a video device?
