Hello there

Post by Xirdrak »

Hello there,

I'm Xirdrak. I've started playing Trackmania in 2008, stopped in 2012.
I'm now a Shootmania player since early 2013.
I'm here to talk about many things, it may looks like a miscellany of every questions and remarks i had since i'm a fan on Trackmania and Shootmania.

First of all, i came in peace.
I want to talk first about the fact you dudes made a hard work, sometimes a really good work, sometimes less good but you worked hard. And i really appreciate this. Thank you.
You have made something awesome, you've accorded people to met other countless people on your games, creating communities, teams, etc... People met in fun, in competition or both on your games. There was always an exchange between people, you created a community around you, supporting you and helping you. And that was incredible.

Secondly I would like to talk about something that makes me sad.
There is less exchanges between people, your community is decreasing slowly. I remember the time when there was always many people doing awesome things. There was always movement and something greater than ourselves at work because of all that bunch of people exchanging.

To continue on my launch, i would like to underline some points.
- Why is it so hard to create a simple server ? Why do we must change our NAT settings? This slows a lot of people creating server and exposing their maps.
- Why the game's interface isn't more fluid and intuitive?
- The lambda player needs more informations about the game IN-game. The wiki page and the forum is great. But nowadays many people have abandoned Forums (generally).
- Where are the begginers servers?
And so many other points... I don't have to tell you everything, it is not my job to do so. I know a lot of people have made their feedbacks.

And to finish, I want to talk about something that makes me kind of angry.
I've worked really hard on the map editor since i've played on trackmania. That is the main point I love so much in your games. The map editor is simple and cool. So, on shootmania i've tried too. I've tried for now three years to do my best on the map editors. I made more mistakes than good things  but i mainly progressed. I've always aimed cups and ESWC. I wanted so much to see my maps being played.
But when nobody gives you a feedback because there is nobody, when you can't run a personal server without paying it and when at last somebody try your map and you get a "lol wtf map", "shitty map" or just vote "---" and leave without playing it and the website saves the vote on the map. Just because they don't know the map... It happens so much. And the mappers will aggree.

I've never abandoned, always trying to do my best, inspired by other mappers and maps. When I saw my maps were going the right way, they were played on few new cups but no ESWC annonced until it was annonced out of nowhere with a map list just chosen by hardly a few people when your game is normally a community game. Even if it is not your fault. I just want to stop. Right now. And go make something else better in my life than trying to do something good but just wasting my time for nothing.

So i'm leaving the ship. I was a silent fan for years, a piece of the submerged part of the iceberg. And didn't have any pleasure in creating maps for a long time now, so i'm leaving.

Thank you guys for everything.

Hi Xirdrak,

I understand your disappointment :)

The problem in my opinion :
- The new maps are very easily accepted by the community.
- The community is very small and composed of many old players, that does not make it easy the entry of new maps.
- Many players tryhard old maps and don't want to retryhard other except where like them immediately..

With your help, we tried to include new maps in Re.XteD CUP, but too much players were not interested.
Sorry for not having more insisted, but the motivation of the community had demotivated me :)

Hi,

The most disappointing thing to me is the fact it is so hard to just create a simple server. If only it was only "Create server" and launch your server from the game with the settings you want and without the NAT-shits-things i'm sure i would have a lot of feedback for my maps and i would have continue. But no. Actually i can't create by myself a server and i also can't buy a server, so, just fuck it.

I've got like a tons of maps unknowed and unshared that i'll share when i'll have the time.

And, to answer what you said and resume too : The problem is the community. The word which was in the 3 points you listed is : Community. And what happen to a game which need a community to survive but has a bad community? It dies.

No problem for the Rexted Cup, not your fault if players didn't play until ESWC and maplist announcement.

Cya.

Hi.

What do you mean by " create a server " ?

Hardware or software ?

I'm totally noob too about setting up servers , but setting up a mania server isn't realy that hard.
And if you are asking here in the right topic , there are always people who want to help. ( maybe takes some time )

Anyway , sad to hear.

Btw , you maps can also be put on MX ( Mania exchange ) , its free and you can upload them there.

And yes , a lot of people are demotivated cause the lack of updates , and support from Nadeo's side.
All we can do is wait and see what happens.

I don't see what is the difficulty with servers. Sometime ago I set up a dedicated server in my PC, it was working as intended. It takes time to learn how to do it but once you know, then it will be easy to change maps, create new servers. You can rent a virtual machine and set up the server there if you need. But I don't know how costly it will be to run a dedicated server there.

First of all its sad to hear that you will leave, we need players like you who try to do stuff for the commiunities.

Then what kind of maps did you make? I know servers in Elite, Siege and Royal where you maps could be tested/played.
I am sure you tried hard to find servers/admins to test your maps, but maybe another step would have been to ask here in the forum before giving up ;)

In the end I really like your map Lazarus! One of my favorite siege maps, playing it nearly every day on the NoMaam 100k server :1010

Thank you for your answers.

@Hackie: Hi,
By creating i server, i mean that, you clic(=you create the server), it works. People can now join you. And nothing to do with the NAT restrictions. You know, i've spent a lot of time trying to make my own server, reading wikimania, persons solutions on forums... And I'm saying that because I can't change my NAT. Not that i wouldn't, but i can't. I'm on a special network, that's why.
I know there's other games which made that, don't remember the names but i'm sure.
Yeah, i know for MX, i've registered myself long time ago.

@Alexey85: I've tried many times, many things. And that didn't work at all.

@HYPE:
Thank you for your words. I've tried to ask Admin's servers for elite, siege and royal.
Actually i've tried myself to do Elite, Siege, Royal, Combo and Infected maps mainly.

I thought that being on MX and asking admins on server was enough.

Thx for my siege map :) Look : http://img110.xooimage.com/files/4/b/3/ ... d5e8ad.png

Thank you Kremsy, actually i'm puting in order my maps. Deleting drafts, arranging my unreleased maps, etc...

I'll upload everything in a compressed folder with subfolders.

It should looks like :

•••XIRDRAK'S MAPS•••
__• 2015 •
____- Elite
_______-Finished
_______-Non-finished
____- Siege
_______-Finished
_______-Non-finished
____- Royal
_______-Finished
_______-Non-finished

Etc...

And you could do what you want with the maps.

Creating more and more servers is a stupid idea that tears apart the community anyway. In ShootMania at any givem moment, there's more servers online than players themselves. Now think about it, is it really necessary to create more?
That's just from a view from my aspect, though other people might think different. :)

Regarding maps, I guess there's some servers with good administration that would happily accept your maps. For Royal maps you've got the Smurfs, which could maybe use them for any cups if they're good, for Siege I'd be glad to take it on my 100k server as HYPE stated before, if it's up to Nadeos standards and if the community will enjoy it. I can assure you Lazarus is personally one of my favourite maps, we play it a lot and we can never get tired of it, just an amazing map to play.
Also the unfinished maps might be a good template, if someone else decides to finish them, and ofcourse state the original is yours. :)

If or when you decide to release the maps, you can PM me, if you want, or if you post download link anywhere. Good maps are always welcome to my server. :D
