I think using Geo DNS would be a great option. But it also requires self hosting DNS or using a DNS service elsewhere. Also means more costs.
Maybe at the start (and how it's been used right now) not yet and implement it later on when there are a few users and servers for the network.
But really. This would be a requirement if we want it to be superb fast. The balancing could be better with this too when we have enough servers everywhere.
Edit: I just saw this service. We could try it out (https://www.zerigo.com/managed-dns)

Re: Starting an association of static file servers/hosters
i would like to help, about how many GB of data we speak here? i only have 100 GB discspace free, but 500 MBit/s unmetered bandwidth, so i can donate ~ 100 TB bandwith per month if needed.
Also does anybody want to help outside of europe?

Re: Starting an association of static file servers/hosters
We are still unknown at the size and bandwith we will need. We don't have concrete users that want to host files with us. (maybe undef, I think so).TheBigG. wrote:i would like to help, about how many GB of data we speak here? i only have 100 GB discspace free, but 500 MBit/s unmetered bandwidth, so i can donate ~ 100 TB bandwith per month if needed.

Geo locatinon DNS will be used I think, I'm testing the zerigo service (the free one, but we need the first upgrade for the number of records needed).

Re: Starting an association of static file servers/hosters
Why use a paid service, if we can setup a free one without limitations in our own Servers?
Re: Starting an association of static file servers/hosters
i dont think that this is needed if all servers are located in europe

Re: Starting an association of static file servers/hosters
Not yet needed indeed. But I think we could better make the system ready from the start to let it support this in the future. (So yes, but only europe zone filled in).
But still any servers welcome, but we are not yet done with setting up our master repo.

Re: Starting an association of static file servers/hosters
well, no, you can define page rules which aint just for pages, at least for the plan I configured for a client that was the case. We were caching mp4 files and html pages as well as the default files cloudfare caches. It was a while ago so not sure if it changed.TheBigG. wrote:to easyoliverde8 wrote:just a question why not cloudflare ?![]()
they do not cache everything so you still need a server that can handle some traffic.
Because the free version of cloudfare with 3 rules might be sufficientaskuri wrote:Why use a paid service, if we can setup a free one without limitations in our own Servers?

I am not criticizing I just have the impression you are creating somethng that might be overkill

Developper for The next generation, Clean and Powerfull controller eXpansion for your SM & TM server . Working on eXpansion² with full MP4 support and many other awesome features...
Re: Starting an association of static file servers/hosters
20$/month and you tell me it is still cheaper? We're paying a little more than a 1€/moth, which is nearly the same in USD. Well, we're testing zerigo's DNS service atm. They also got a free plan.
I don't see a reason for doing it easy. Our knowledge is sufficient for doing it with own servers, which are in some cases a little overpowered for the puposes we're using them. In my case for example.
I can say it again: my idea when opening this thread was to SAVE costs, by using overcapacity of ou servers. Even the GeoDNS is overpowered I think, since there's no server yet, which is not placed in Europe. And setting up GeoDNS for one or two servers in America/Asia? Maybe we should wait some time, before we begin with that. Maybe it's not even required

Re: [WIP] ManiaCDN.net: the mania content delivery network
We just finished the synchronization of mirrors and the checks, if they're up to date (they automatically get kicked out of the DNS, if the data (timestamp.txt) is older than 24h.
Basicly, the most things are done. We're waiting for data and hosters now
If you got some ideas for important and high-frequented content, which needs a place in the network, reply in this topic or PM me

Re: [WIP] ManiaCDN.net: the mania content delivery network
News of today:
DNS Service Choice: News on the DNS Geo IP service testing. The test before didn't really worked out that well. Currently we are testing Amazon AWS Route 53. Which is pretty good so far, also stable, which is really important. The service is a pay as you go service, this means we will pay for the amount of DNS queries.
New hosts: We have a few new hosts in our network. Still searching for more, we really like to make a big stable network. Also we are really searching for non-eu servers as we still only have 1 non-eu server (New York).
Donations: Donations are welcome, EU IBAN or PayPal donation button will be available. PayPal donate link click me..
Work In Progress and ToDo: About page, status page, server manager page (to temp. disable your mirror server), api for mirrors, interface for content owners, ping testing, more..? Suggestions welcome!
Thanks for the great help we already got and lets continue with the spirit!
BTW: For any questions, requests or mirror requests, you can reply or you can either pm me or Askuri. Together we are the ManiaCDN team!
